Print captions cannot be modified?

Post by fbungarz » 06 Oct 18 0:10

I just discovered that in version 4 one can print contact sheets with captions again. That's great !!!

But then I tried to modify the text that the captions use and it does not accept any changes. In fact, when I enter ANY text, that text disappears:

I select to print with a caption:

Print-caption_cannot_be_modified_01.jpg (252.27 KiB) Viewed 655 times
Here the standard file name:
Print-caption_cannot_be_modified_02.jpg
Print-caption_cannot_be_modified_02.jpg (127.3 KiB) Viewed 655 times
I try to change the caption text to include scientific name, collector and collection number, acronym and accession number:

Print-caption_cannot_be_modified_03.jpg (139.49 KiB) Viewed 655 times
The changes do not get applied if I hit OK and no caption gets added; if I open "edit caption text" again everything has disappeared :?

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to save the new caption somehow? I thought hitting "apply" would do it? I do not see a save button anywhere...

[BTW: I cannot save ANY caption, even if I just write the word TEST]

Following your steps, I get the same results.

Tested with 4.2.1.1675.
Photo Supreme 3.3.0.2602 (64 bits) (Windows)

4.3 was uploaded to the website today (no webupdate trigger yet). This version also fixes the print captions

Dear Hert,
thanks for fixing this!
The caption text can now be saved and the macro commands work. That's great.
Unfortunately though the text used for the captions in the final print and the previews do not match in size. In fact, only when choosing an enormously large font size are the captions printed at a somewhat legible size.

To illustrate this with a few screenshots:

At font size 20 the captions in the preview appear larger than the images:
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_20.jpg
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_20.jpg (197.26 KiB) Viewed 525 times
However, when printed into a PDF the font is essentially illegible:
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_20.jpg
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_20.jpg (321.43 KiB) Viewed 525 times
Choosing the largest possible font size 72 the captions are all over the page, no images are shown:
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_72.jpg
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_72.jpg (189.59 KiB) Viewed 525 times
In the PDF output file the captions are still tiny, a bit bigger than at font size 20, but still hardly legible:
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_72.jpg
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_72.jpg (323.13 KiB) Viewed 525 times
Mayby I am doing something wrong?
:?

BTW - is it possible to save different captions with the print templates?

Could this be related to the way I have set up Adobe Acrobat and at which resolution it prints images? Perhaps I am choosing a too high resolution for the images and thus the font gets scaled down too much?
I used to print contact sheets with custom captions in IDImager all the time and was disappointed, when this option was discontinued in PSu. Now, I am thrilled to have it back. In IDImager the font always looked a bit messy, poor resolution. I believe it was printed not as a scalable font, but as an image. Perhaps that now changed and the font is printed at much higher resolution? But then somehow setting the images to high quality prints might affect the size of the font?
Not sure if that might be the case. It is just an idea...

Dear Hert,
it is better, but the preview and the PDF still do not match.
FYI - I have my PDF settings in Acrobat at "High Quality Print", Images get printed at 300dpi, no down sampling.

Here is what a Preview of the captions at at font size 12 looks like:
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_12.jpg
Preview_ContactSheet_font-size_12.jpg (232.47 KiB) Viewed 339 times
And this is the result, if printed into a PDF [note: the font size is larger and if the captions are wider than the image, they also do not wind around into the next line (marked by the red box)]:
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_12.jpg
PDF-output_ContactSheet_font-size_12.jpg (239.78 KiB) Viewed 339 times
Thanks for looking into it!!!

Frank
