Re: Geo-tagging - A User's Guide

Very comprehensive Snowman! A couple of personal tips + Android apps that may be of interest: 1) I also take a reference photo of my mobile phone time (using the DigitalClock app by Light Dot Net) as the basis for time correction, but never worry about trying to hit 00 seconds. Instead, I use anothe...

Re: google maps for "development purposes only"

Have you enabled all the required API's, there are several, I don't have the list here at present but I suspect you need the Gecode etc. Hi Geoff, I did enable several, but just logged on to Google to check and they've suspended my account for 'potentially suspicious activity' so I guess that may b...

Re: google maps for "development purposes only"

I recently obtained a Google Maps API key (using a virtual credit card that I've created for the purpose with a very low expenditure limit) and am free of the "development purposes only" map when using geocoding via the action button. However when setting the optional Geolocation when creating a cat...

Re: Naming convention scanned film

Interesting Harald. I use photographer-date-device-serialNumber for file names as (for me) its necessary and sufficient to guarantee a unique name for every image. Images are renamed outside PSU using FreeCommander's Multi Rename feature - which stores and applies multiple profiles in a similar way ...

Re: Naming convention scanned film

I agree with Harald on metadata.

My file name convention always remains photographer-date-device-serialNumber (and for device I'd use 'scan' or 'Minolta5400').

Re: Scanned transparencies

These days I record the date of scans in the file name only, using fillers for unknowns - so 199ymmdd or (if the decade is uncertain) c1990mmdd. All scans are also labelled with "scanned from slide" "scanned from print" or "scanned from negative", and if there is an obvious season, then a label for ...

Re: Another newbie question

Why is that ? I certainly don't! Path and File yes, but not just the file name, most cameras will cycle around a 4-digit count or maybe use a time based file name, but I have plenty of repeats of filenames on there own. In particular because 1) a simple search on a filename could bring up tens/hund...

Re: Another newbie question

Mke - the only reason I was thinking of converting to DNG is that as a format it's meant to be 'future proof' as opposed to proprietary RAW formats such as RAF and NEF, but this may be a case of 'a little knowledge being a dangerous thing'! :) Future-proofing was an intended benefit of DNG (there a...

Re: Another newbie question

I don't use Affinity, but on your other points:

I don't see any advantage in converting to DNG - but what are your objectives in doing this?

Yes, versioning would be a good way of grouping your images. You may also want to think about how you name your files to help facilitate this.

Re: DxO and DAM develpment

It doesn't surprise me that DxO users would like some basic functionality, or that DxO would seek to add it to increase the attractiveness of their product. Though as a DxO user myself I won't be using it; IMHO DxO are unlikely to add anything approaching the sophistication of PSU. Like Larry, I wou...

You can buy stickers for different keyboard layouts that might help - or, if only a couple of keys that you won't forget, try a custom mapping/remapping using MS Keyboard Layout Creator (assuming you're on Windows)...
