Are custom fields saved in file?

Post by Larry56 »

I've created a custom field of Portfolio and save the portfolio name in that field. I assumed it could be easily found in the file by other apps that can read jpg metadata but I can't find portfolio names in another app. Have I misunderstood where the custom field is saved? If so, is there some xmp/IPTC field I can use to save portfolio names?

Custom fields are written in XMP in the ICD (IDImager Custom Data) schema. Make sure that the custom field is created as "public" since "private custom fields are, well, private.

Note that not all products out there read all XMP data. Some only read schemas that "they know about".

Tip: If you want to see the XMP in your file when embedded, use right click -> Run Script from Repository -> Metadata -> Export to XMP Sidecar File.

Then check the sidecar file; eg IMG0001.JPG gets a sidecar IMG0001.XMP. You can delete the created XMP sidecar file afterwards to keep your file system clean and organized

Thank you. I figured out that I had set it to private but when made new one as public it shows up although I don't know why I do that because I see Photo Supreme already saves the "collection name" in xmp. I'll probably us it to add some additional information.

I use XnView MP to look at the metadata and I can see the fields in the ExitTool tab but not in the XMP tab which I think would be expected.
