A GPS question

Hi all, I'm brand new to this forum as I've just bought the software.

I'm somewhat confused about the GPS date not being shown.

I have over 33 thousand photos, mostly in RAW formats, and I used DXO Deep Prime to convert them to DNG files. For instance, I have a CR2 file along with a DNG file. So far so good. I found a neat little freeware (this is before finding Photo Supreme) called GeoSetter and I tagged all 33 thousand files.

Now that I have PSU I'm playing with the files and I do not see any GPS data!

In Windows Explorer, properties, I see the GPS data in the DNG files, but not in the CR2 - in PSU neither file shows GPS data.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

I did get a Google API key and I will go through the 33 thousand files again if I must, but I'm hoping someone can help. To be clear, I did a LOT of traveling for my job and the locations vary from Hawaii to Barcelona, and Puerto Rico to Newfoundland - I am all over the place. The little tiny map I see in PSU might be a bit hard to use.

I did a search in this forum but I didn't get a lot of hits about GPS.

A warm welcome to the forum.

How you describe it, it sounds like you have incomplete metadata and that the GPS data is not written to the XMP. The tool that first creates the XMP should also convert the existing lower levels of metadata to XMP, such as Exif.

Try this: right click on the thumb and select Metadata -> Convert metadata to XMP. That will make sure that your metadata is consistent at all levels.

I tried that but I'm not sure what I should be seeing. Also, should I do this for all my photos?

Some folders are a bit of a mess. I might have all the following:
_MG_7343.cr2
_MG_7343.cr2.xmp
_MG_7343.xmp

Would it be of benefit to delete ALL the xmp files and recreate them? I hope there is a way to do this globally.

Let me explain a bit further. If I choose an image and expand "Image Content" the fields are all blank, if I expand "Technical" on the same photo the GPS coordinates are there - at least on most of the photos. I suppose my question should have been how to combine the two.

Since I have the Google API key, I have been using the "Lookup" function and it seems to work pretty well, so if I have to I'll do that for all 33K photos.

LOL. I may have found a VERY awkward workaround.

I used IrfanView to look at a photo and under "Image Information -> EXIF Info", I can click on "Show in Google Maps". I get that information and plug it into "Image Content -> Location -> lookup". Luckily I keep all the photos on a location together in a single folder, so that I can tag all of them at the same time.

EDIT: I just found out that RawTherapee can do the same, just by clicking on the GPS coordinates. Now I'm wondering why RawTherapee & IrfanView both have the GPS info but not PSU.

Sorry, but I am still a bit confused with how PSU seems to be working.

I did what Hert suggested and converted Metadata to XMP.

Now, when I look at the dates of the files in Windows Explorer, I see this:
_IMG_2167.CR2 5/9/2024 (That's when I copied all the files from my NAS to a local "D:" drive)
_IMG_2167.XMP 5/24/2024 (Today's date, indicating that the file was newly written)
_MG_2167-CR2_DxO_DeepPRIME.DNG (Today's date, indicating that the file was newly written)
None of the DNG.XMP files were modified.

So, the CR2 file has a working XMP and the DNG does not need one, or it's built-in? Is that correct?

The XMP standard uses the convention filename.xmp for sidecars. Filename.extension.xmp is not a valid XMP sidecar. Products that write XMP in that format do not follow the standard and offer you reduced interoperability.

Dng files have embedded XMP, as do jpg, psd, and some other formats.

Ah. So the raw files have a sidecar file. Like CR2, ARW etc.

Any idea why PSU doesn't read the GPS info in the DNGs? Both RawTherapee & IrfanView see the coordinates.

Most likely because these tools read the gps from Exif, while Psu always uses the highest level of metadata and that is XMP. If the XMP exists and no gps info is in there then your metadata is not in dync at all levels. The tool that created the XMP should have also converted the existing Exif (with gps) to the XMP. Unfortunately some tools don’t do that and in Psu you will quickly be confronted with such discrepancy

“Convert Metadata to XMP” makes sure that your XMP is healthy again by converting Exif and or IPTC to XMP. As if Psu was the first tool creating the XMP.

I did try “Convert Metadata to XMP” on one folder, but I'm going to wait until I Geotag all 33K files and I'll do the conversion in one shot.

I'm actually doing that now - it's just that I was hoping all the time I spent using GeoSetter was not wasted, but sadly it was.
