Constant thumbnail building ver 2024

Post by Larry56 »

I've just updated to 2024 on MacBook Pro 16 Intel from 2023. So far it seems to be going OK except every time I start PSu v2024.0.1.6225 it displays a message "Continuing the thumbnail building for 3676 files." It doesn't take too long and the files being processed seem to be the same one each time.

Any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it?

I've the same problem - But I started with the new version yesterday morning and this morning (after 24 hours), he's still building tumbnails.

It was doing that for me the first few times, but after running a Compact database and also Verifying Quick all was OK.

Ah that makes sense. It could well be that there are files in the Catalog that were never completely imported and that no longer exists on disk. Then PSU cannot complete the import on startup.

Verify Folder will fix that.

BTW: these "issues" only exist for older users. Unlike older versions, PSU24 checks on startup if there are missing thumbs to be built and if there are incomplete imports. Once your catalog is no longer giving these processes on startup then you'll know that your catalog is lined up correctly. And if after a new import, not all files are complete (eg closed the application while the import sync/thumbs were still running) then PSU24 will fix that after a restart of the application.

I've tried compacting, running Verify Quick and even Rebuild thumbnails but I still get the same message. Could this be related to an external drive I do not have plugged into my computer? I haven't checked those folders yet.

I do have a new problem that may or may not be related. I keep seeing Access Violation displayed in the thumb description area on newly imported photos. I'll post a new message in case it's not related.

I think I found the problem. I have an external drive not connected in my catalog. I connected and then PSu started rebuilding thumbs. After a little while it completed and I exited PSu and ejected external drive and returned to PSu. This time it did not continue rebuilding thumbnails.

I am having the same problem. Except that I have now done all of the fixes that are in the discussion. I have confirmed that all of the folders are on the same hard drive as the database--none are on external drives and all are present in the folders on the local drive. I have done a Quick Verify for every single folder individually. And I have compacted the database and the thumbnails. It is completely stuck now at 0.8% Building Thumbnails. I left it overnight in case it was going take a while, but it didn't change at all. It also will not "Rebuild Selected Thumbnails" after editing files (e.g., cropping, brightness adjustment).

As a follow-up I am running build 2024.0.1.6225 on an iMac with an M1 2021 chip and macOS Sonoma 14.1.2.

I also struggled with getting ver 2024 to complete the rebuild of thumbnails over the past week. Eventually I did run the Verify Quick and Compact database. Then in rebuilding thumbnails, the program would hang at various points even though Activity Monitor indicated it was processing. Leaving it run for 10 or 12 hours showed no progress even though Activity Monitor showed PS CPU usage at 320-350%. I began noting the file it hung up on and removed the file from the database. The program was still hanging at various points. It wasn't making much sense, because it would run to maybe 10% complete, then hang. Next time it might make it to only 1 or 2% complete before hanging. I began to notice that the majority of the files that it was hanging on were .mov files (something like 14 out of 16). I went through and deleted the remaining .mov files and it ran to 99.9% before hanging. I eventually stopped it and restarted and everything seems to be okay. This was quite a relief, as i had deleted my latest backup by a stupid mistake and would have lost a month's work, but things now seem to be okay. I did now have over 150 stacked files, though I have never created one. I also had about thirty duplicate files and over 100 similar files that had never been identified before.
