RAW Shell Extender (freeware)

In my quest to get thumbnails in Windows for the many different RAW files I have available here as samples, I decided to build my own RAW shell extender that supports thumbnails for many available RAW files.

Most important for me were DNG, CR2, NEF, PSD, PSPINFO, and PEF files, but the tool supports more formats.

This tool isn't tested a lot so I don't know how it behaves in the long term, but alas, I thought I'd share it with the Photog community as a freeware:

These are the formats that RSE supports for building thumbs:

- Canon CR2 files (all models)
- THM files from Minolta and Canon
- Canon CRW (not all; try to see if it supports yours; the G-series is known to give no thumbs)
- Adobe DNG files; The thumb of DNG files also reflect the embedded preview
- Nikon NEF files (all models)
- Pentax PEF files
- Olympus ORF files (some models may give no thumb; try and find out if your model is supported)
- Sony SRF files
- Sony SR2 files
- Sony ARW files
- Fuji RAF files
- Adobe PSD files
- Corel/Jasc PSPINFO files

I've updated the RSE to 0.3.0.4. On some machines it didn't run because of a missing file in the deployment set.

This version adds Exif info into tool-tips to Windows Explorer.


I have updated the opening post with info about supported files for both Thumbs and Exif info tooltips.

Thanks for making this freely available - I am sure many will find it useful.

But, you might want to think again about the name and abbreviation - RSE = Raw Shooter Essentials is pretty well ingrained in our brains already! So, "RSE supports many RAW file formats" is likely to be passed over as old news.

I tried to install this on my Win XP SP2 system, and got this error:
"Error 1904 Module C:\Program Files\IdPlanner Products\RAW Shell Extender\RAW Shell Extender.dll failed to register. HRESULT - 2147220473"

When I closed this dialog with OK, the "Install successfully completed" dialog appeared. Of course, nothing works, although I'm not really sure what to look for since it didn't install. For sure, thumbnail views of CR2 and NEF images don't appear.

Hi Jim,

Make sure you install this tool with Administrator rights.

I finally got some time to try the recommended fixes, but they didn't do anything...the installation still fails.

Hi xxabi. Sorry that this doesn't work on Vista. This tool is not actively maintained.

This utility won't be updated. In fact it was the "proof of concept" application for working with SQLite (the thumbs in this tool are cached in a SQLite database and with this tool I tested how working with BLOBs would work.

These days several vendors offer RAW CODECs for Windows to support the most common RAW files in Windows Explorer.
