jpg rotation and DxO PL5

Post by johnbarrett »

I have two queries on rotation with jpgs. I use DxO PL5 as my RAW processor and occasionally add to a batch of RAW images some jpgs from my phone. This nearly always is imported as portrait even though taken as landscape. No problem, rotate in Photo Supreme 5. Now the problems, DxO PL5 doesn’t read the rotation information from the jpg, it does the keywords. Is there anyway of the information being added that might force it to read it?
When copying the images across to a different PC (laptop) 2 of the 3 were shown in Photo Supreme 5 as landscape but one portrait. Full screen it and now landscape close full screen and the thumbnail shown as portrait. On the original desktop its not doing this. Miner irritant but again anything I could do?
I have tried converting metadata to XMP and though the program is doing something its not creating a XMP file as there isn’t one.

Now I am looking I have found the cpied jpgs are not displaying correctly in other sets of imiges either. Some are OK others have no correcrion applied at all so its most inconstant, in full screen some disply correctly others not.

Like DXO, PSU also uses lossless editing, meaning the rotation is part of the editing recipe.
The issue here is that DXO writes the wrong orientation in their developed JPG files. This has been reported to them many times before. But DXO is mainly a RAW editor and metadata is of less relevance for them as it is for a DAM like PSU.

Back to your issue. Best is that you correct the wrong orientation tag in the Image Details->Technical.

Thanks for some reason the thumbnail refuses to go landscape, not a real problem.

I have created a few test images and these have corrected and copied correctly so much better. Just got to get DxO to sort out there problems, but don't think much chance of that!

Others have told me they find the thumbnail doesn't usually show rotation as well. “Photo Supreme leaves the displayed thumbnails alone but double clicking to access the additional image editing options then detects the change in the images.”
I also find the range of rotations odd, not easy to just turn a portrait to landscape (or at least I find it a sod)

I have found that changing the rotaion in FastStone Image Viewer has changed jpg's showing correctly in PS thumbnails and full screen.

Yes, DxO PL has problems with the EXIF tag for image orientation. When you look at DxO forums, this issue is discussed quite frequently and is coming back again and again but so far nothing has been done about it. The other thing is that DxO PL doesn't have the image rotation commands.

I have already answered some days ago in a similar topic, so see here what helped me with erratic behaviour of rotated images in PS: viewtopic.php?p=129873#p129873
