Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
I am a long time user, and I am getting quite frustrated at the moment. I am using Photo Supreme to manage a fairly large number of photo art resources. I download collections of files into the categorized folder structure I use, then use the "Scan for missing folders" feature to ad the new content into PS. It often freezes while processing, and I have to force quit PS and restart it. Why is this happening?
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
In my experience (in Windows) PSU appears is reported to be 'not responding' when under heavy load, but is normally actually running and will come back to life when done. So one possibility is that you might be interrupting it when it's actually still working, if the Mac version does similar.
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
I have had the same experience reported by Mke for other issues. The MAC OS shows that PSu is not working and needs force quitting, when in fact it is still working
Never say never change, but using Mac since 2005. Photo Supreme 3.3.0.2605. I endorse the interoperability of files between applications and systems.
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
It's not still working. It is dead. I have let it go for hours with no progress. There is a bug here. The only thing that helps is forcing it to quit and then restarting. Then it dies again after a short period. Rinse, repeat. This is a bug, a serious bug.
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
If PSU freezes completely while importing a folder (which is what you do) then I think there might be some corrupted file in the folder structure being imported that chokes PSU.
Can you narrow this down to a specific folder or even file(s)?

Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
No specific file or folder. It happens frequently in different folders when I have added content (new subfolders) and then do a "Scan for Missing Folders"on the parent folder. The scan finds the missing folder(s) but then when processing the added folder(s) and the Activity window shows various "Verification Service(s) running, after some indeterminate time it freezes, with the spinning beach ball. The verification Services progress indicators stop advancing and the spinning beach ball appears. I have tried waiting for long periods but it never wakes up. So I force quit PS, then restart it and try the Scan for Missing Folders again, and I find that some of the added folders have been processed, but there may be some that still need to be processed. In some cases they have all been added, even though the program appeared frozen. I hope this helps you narrow down what's going on. If there is anything I can do to narrow it down further, let me know.

Try to import the folder with the Importer does that stall also?

Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
I can import individual folders, and I don't think I have seen a problem with that. But if I add several subfolders into a parent folder and then try to process them via the "Scan for Missing Folders" feature, that is when the problem occurs. If it finds more that four or five folders to be added, it will almost certainly freeze.
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
A case in point. I just had it scan a folder where it found 5 newly added subfolders. It froze midway through the processing, so I had to force quit. I started the program again, and scanned the same parent folder. Three of the subfolders had been processed and it now found two remaining folders to be added. I process those and it seems to work fine. This is a typical scenario that exemplifies what I have been experiencing over and over again.
Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
AFAIK - The newest version number is 3.3.0.2589.
Perhaps worth to try upgrading to the latest release?

Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
How much RAM do you have on the machine? If you have other applications running at the same time as PSu, try shutting them down. It is possible you are running low on resources, and that could cause PSu to crash.
One thing you could try after adding some subfolders is to right click on the parent folder and then select Verify Folder. What happens when you do that?

Re: Frequent freezes while doing folder management - Mac
I'm just following up on Hert's question and suggesting some other things to try out: can you try (re)importing the parent folder after adding several subfolders? Does that (reliably) work? Long shot, but did you try compacting the database and/or restarting the machine?
