iphone AAE sidecar file?

Reviewing some recent folders of iPhone photos, I discovered that some of them had AAE sidecar files. I looked at one of them with notepad, and it's XML-based.

Does anyone know how Apple uses this file? If the image was not modified by any iPhone apps, can I safely ignore it? Or, should I rename the file with an XML file type and import it into PSU?

I never even heard of the AAE file type until about an hour before I did my posting. Since it appears to address the same issues as an XMP file, why oh why did Apple need to invent a new file type? To stick it to big, bad Adobe for their temerity in being successful with pro-level photo apps?

So maybe the question for everyone is:
Has anyone else encountered this file type, for those who own iPhones or Macbooks? Is this important enough to ask Hert for support, via Mantis?

Hi Phil I would say you're right. Open standards or no, companies want to make as much stuff proprietary as possible to lock users into using their own tools.

And proprietary lock-in always favors the "big guy" in the market.

I'm inclined to just rename all the AAEs to XML and let PSu and Lightroom deal with it, at least for one go-around. Then I may decide to just ignore AAEs in the future.
