assign new label with path
assign new label with path
in idiprov5 when assigning a new label that has not been used before, I can enter event::birthdays:
:surname::person and get the complete hierarchy in one step. Is there something similar in photo supreme? I can't seem to find it. The "::" doesn't work. nor does the delimited keyword character set in preferences.
Re: assign new label with path
You can create a new label by typing its name in the Label Assignment Panel and then use the CREATE NEW option.
Btw; I'd like to discourage you from writing delimited keywords. Use the Lughtroom Keywords instead (even if you don't use Lightroom)

Re: assign new label with path
the dialog that comes up with create new is good if only the end of the hierarchy is being created new. In my example, what if I have a new surname and new person. Do I then have to create the surname and then the new person? Is there a way to create both together?
Regarding delimited keywords, I thought using them could be useful for sorting in other programs when the person doesn't have photo supreme and only wants to look thru the photo set. A good example would be windows live photo where you would set the "/" as the delimiter. I am trying to understand "best practices" and why they are best. <G>

Re: assign new label with path
That's why I use delimited keywords and "/" as the delimiter - other family members use Windows Live Photo to browse our collection. None of us use Lightroom.pquart wrote:Regarding delimited keywords, I thought using them could be useful for sorting in other programs when the person doesn't have photo supreme and only wants to look thru the photo set. Re: assign new label with path
Geoff, you don't have to use Lightroom to benefit from using Lightroom keyword hierarchies. Does WLP not read Lightroom hierarchies? I'd be very surprised if it doesn't (then again Microsoft is not very active in supporting standards, official and non-official)...

Re: assign new label with path
Nope it doesn't. This is Microsoft that we are talking about.

Re: assign new label with path
FWIW, we run windows media center for showing off our photos in the lounge room, and it doesn't understand LR keywords either. So I also have taken up bad practice by writing '/' delimited keywords.
Re: assign new label with path
(Off-topic, sorry) Steve, what's the performance of Windows Media Center when handling the Tags formed by delimited keywords? I found it too slow to use...

Re: assign new label with path
Is there a GOOD reason why you discourage to use delimited keywords in PSU ?Btw; I'd like to discourage you from writing delimited keywords. Use the Lightroom Keywords instead (even if you don't use Lightroom)
The two delimited keywords "people::photographer::John Doe" and "people::family & friends::John Doe" are obviously different. Using undelimited keywords that is not obvious, "John Doe = John Doe". The same goes for countless other duplicates. Keywords out of context don't mean a thing...
Also: switching from IDI to PSU with a catalog of tenth of thousands of images I'd rather avoid a complete re-write of keywords.
Thanks,
Frank
Re: assign new label with path
It's non standard. The specs describe the dc:subject to be singular. With delimited keywords this is misused by writing multi level hierarchies in such a field, even with a non-standard delimiter. Delimited keywords were a workaround for the missing ability for writing "standarized" keyword hierarchies to XMP, as there was an omission there. Adobe later launched Lightroom and with Lightroom 2.0 they closed that gap and introduced the lr:HierarchicalSubject field. This field is now becoming main stream and I recommend that everyone switch to using Lightroom keywords, even if you're not using the tool Lightroom. This is a general misperception. The headline, for example, is written to photoshop:Headline which also doesn't mean that only Photoshop uses it.Is there a GOOD reason why you discourage to use delimited keywords in PSU ?
My recommendation to everyone is, stop using delimited keywords and start writing Lightroom keywords. This is the best strategy toward future interoperability

Re: assign new label with path
I hear you, but unfortunately, in my particular case, adopting it would break my current interoperability. So I ain't going to do it. Not until either we stop using Windows Photo Gallery, or Microsoft astonishes the world by building LR hierarchies into Windows Photo Gallery.IDimager wrote:My recommendation to everyone is, stop using delimited keywords and start writing Lightroom keywords. Re: assign new label with path
Oh, and while the LR hierarchy is a de facto standard, it is also a proprietary one (under the control of a single vendor: Adobe). The Metadata Working Group (which includes Adobe and Microsoft) have proposed an alternative open standard. Trouble is, of course, no vendors have currently adopted it. In an ideal world, that would be the best standard for future interoperability, and become the better de facto and open standard...

Re: assign new label with path
I completely agree Geoff. But reality is that the dominator controls and Microsoft, better than anyone, should know. In photography world, Microsoft is not a dominator and hence doesn't control. As long as the dominator doesn't adopt a standard, it has no chance of surviving. Microsoft is known to be stubborn when it comes to supporting standards, that is something of their legacy as they are used to be in a position where *they* dominate and control.
Fact is that in the photography world the controlling party is called Adobe and Adobe will never implement different hierarchy standards, simply because they have their own way of doing it, and they do it in an open manner (3 times hooray for XMP) so anyone can follow and read/write their way of doing it. That is what the future will bring for hierarchical keywords in metadata, wether we like it or not is not of any relevancy.

Re: assign new label with path
OK, but re-writing ALL labels for 70,000+ images, I don't know if that is a good idea. BTW, I have been using Lightroom delimited keywords since IDI offered that option.

Frank,
It's just my recommendation...that doesn't mean you have to do it. I'm just discouraging the use of delimited keywords in general.
