Mike:
I think what Jimi and other professionals are lamenting is the end of development. This means two things:
1. No fixes to outstanding bugs, ever.
2. No updating to support new RAW formats, ever.
Especially with #2, IDI is a dead end. Lightroom will continue to support new RAW formats, so you can purchase a camera next year and see support in LR in six months or less.
For those who are still using cameras they purchased years ago, IDI may still work.
For those who do not make a living from their photography, IDI may still work.
Anyone who has a business where IDI plays a key role, is in trouble and needs to look for an alternative as quickly as possible.

Gordon,
IDI users can always use the raw module that comes with PSU. They are exchangeable. New camera support was hardly ever something I had to act on to support them... because not that often a complete new raw format is introduced and existing formats have stabilized.

Re: file-manager
Hert,
You mean the DCRAW.dll from PSU will be compatible to IDi V5?
If so, you made my day
Now we need only someone who writes some uploadscripts to FB and Zenfolio when they change the API
Anyway, just alone the above statement makes me happy! And I can ship around the known bugs...
Cheers,
Michael

Re: file-manager
I might be in danger of stating the obvious here:PSU is a DAM tool, not a File Manager. Use a File Manager for this; for instance Windows Explorer.
DAM stands for Digital Asset Management. A File Manager manages files, which ARE digital assets.

Re: file-manager
You're expecting PSU to be what IDimager is. I mentioned many times that they are different tools and aren't comparable.
BTW; IDimager is not killed. Further development has stopped. The software continues to run, you can still send support questions to support@idimager.com (or use the forum), you can still download the binaries, you can still download your license. Killed means that the product is gone. It is not.
Will IDimager support continue & will outstanding bugs be addressed?
Am I missing something here???IDimager is discontinued, so the answer is no.
Is it just me who feels those statements contradict one another?
Again:

So, one can ask for support, but support unfortunately is discontinued but IDI is still not killed, but remains alive...IDimager is discontinued, so the answer is no.Will IDimager support continue & will outstanding bugs be addressed?
Ah, sooo sorry, NOW I get it:
Its "Support" that is killed. IDI is only discontinued. What a relieve!
Hey, this reminds me of the good old days, when we had these discussions whether one "empties" an image basket or "deletes" a fast collection that is called image basket. Ah, the good ole days

IDimager development is discontinued. Support questions about the existing version are still answered.

Craig Joiner wrote:Sorry Hert, but that's a ridiculous statement. File Management is part of the DAM process. As part of my workflow I have to move finished images into my archive on my NAS. This archive is structured to mirror my backups so there is a folder for each main HDD backup that contains several sub folders that represent each secondary HDD backup and finally within each of these folders are sub folders that represent optical disk backups.
I need to be able to move folders around as my backup structure changes (ie I replace older drives with larger drives or migrate DVDs to BluRay.) I also need to monitor the size of my newest folder to ensure it will fit onto the target backup.
Yes I can do all of this outside of Supreme, but supreme won't know where my files have gone will it? That is a serious flaw for any DAM system.
But supreme replaces IDimager, it's not an alternative product. Some expectation that functionality will continue is only to be expected if you take this approach. Will IDimager support continue & will outstanding bugs be addressed? If the answer to this is no then you have just alienated all your existing IDimager users.Hert/IDimager wrote:You're expecting PSU to be what IDimager is. dpBestflow.org clearly includes Folder Management as a critical part of cataloging/organizing images. Once I select through the tags the files I want, I should be able to put them in a new folder without exiting the catalog program. I strongly disagree with Hert that folder management is not part of cataloging.
Re: file-manager
Isn't this feature what was recently implemented? I may not understand exactly what you want but I saw some folder management information in the latest version update notes...
Build 1.0.8.67 is available
This version completes the Physical Folder Management features in CATALOG > By Folder.
Photo Supreme now allows on physical folders: copy/paste of folders, cut/paste folders, delete folders from disk, rename folders on disk, create sub folders on disk
Additions:
- You can now physically delete a folder from disk in the Catalog -> By Folder
- You can now create physical folder on disk in Catalog -> By Folder

Re: file-manager
Having used your labels and PSu's search facilities to get images from all over your folder structure displayed in the collection viewer (the thumb display) you could select them all and use "Share/Folder Transfer" to copy the files to any other directory of your choice. If you want to reorganize your folder structure for cataloged images then "cut", "copy" and "paste" are context menu items in the "By Folder" view of the Catalog Explorer, but there is/are bug/s that need fixing first, unfortunately.Woodie wrote:Once I select through the tags the files I want, I should be able to put them in a new folder without exiting the catalog program. Also, being pedantic, folder management is not part of cataloging, but many people think it is part of digital asset management .

Ah. You've found the answer. Supreme is a catalog application and IDimager was/is a DAM program.

Re: file-manager
If I copy multiple versions of the same image and if they are versioned before I copy them, do the copied images retain the versioning and the distinction between the Main Version and the sub-versions? My guess is probably not, that the copies can only be made sub-versions of the originals, but I hope I'm wrong.jstartin wrote:use "Share/Folder Transfer" to copy the files to any other directory of your choice.
Re: file-manager
Not when using Share/File Transfer, as far as I can see; I may have pointed Woodie at the wrong feature. I think this is more for getting copies of files gathered in the collection viewer "out of PSu". If you want PSu to know about the copies they have to be imported. But isn't having multiple copies of the same file within the organization a bad thing?Mike Buckley wrote: If I copy multiple versions of the same image and if they are versioned before I copy them, do the copied images retain the versioning and the distinction between the Main Version and the sub-versions? Moving files (cut and paste or drag and drop) belonging to a version set to different folder/s does preserve the versioning fully. Changing from Main+sub-version in the same folder to a Main/Derivative folder structure and back seems to go fine, for example. I can't try moving a whole folder containing versioned images because of a current bug.
Copy and paste just puts extra copies of files in the destination, without labels or versioning, but I would have thought that this is correct. No?

Re: file-manager
Ahhhhhhhh. I apparently misunderstood from messages posted awhile ago that that couldn't be done. That's exactly the capability that I want, especially now that it's possible to create new folders using Supreme. Thanks for that clarification.jstartin wrote: Moving files (cut and paste or drag and drop) belonging to a version set to different folder/s does preserve the versioning fully.
As you can tell, I still haven't gotten around to trying Supreme. Hert's recent posts about upcoming capabilities and newly released capabilities make Supreme seem more and more promising for my use.
Re: file-manager
From memory, Hert has said repeatedly that "there is no File Manager" and there isn't, but there are certainly file management operations to move things around without breaking the catalog, remove folders/files from the catalog, delete from disk & remove from catalog etc. Some folder operations need debugging, but I think that what is needed to manage (rather than just catalog) "Digital Assets" will be available.Mike Buckley wrote: Ahhhhhhhh. On the other hand, PSu doesn't track anything done with Windows Explorer, despite a facility to shell out to it.
