Gradually working through my collection removing and then recreating clean XMP metadata in batches.

For the most part it's working, but I have come across a couple of files that when I use PSU to remove the XMP, File Explorer and other image handlers (e.g. Paint.Net) can display and open the files, but when I use PSU Ctrl+S to recreate the XMP, the files get corrupted again...

Have passed examples to Hert in the hope that he can find out what the problem is with these files.

Hert has come back to say that he couldn't find any problems with the files. After further investigation here, I found that the issue lay in my PC, because when I copied the files to my other PCs, the issue was not present on those PCs.

What's causing this, I have no idea, we've eliminated a number of suspects (Shell extensions, system files, disk problems, viruses). And it's only happened to a couple of files so far out of a total of 80,000+ images...

The files don’t show previews in File Explorer and won’t open in Paint.Net or Microsoft’s Photos, yet do open in Affinity… (see attachments). Could this be some system library that is being used by File Explorer, Photos and Paint.Net, but not by Affinity? I've run sfc /scannow, and that didn't find any problem with system files handling images...

You are trying to open a file as an jpeg image, but it doesn't have a valid jpeg header.
https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/11566 ... corrupted/

I am using Windows 10. I renamed a .png as .JPG. File Explorer is showing the thumbnail. Opens in Affinity V1. Doesn't open in an early version of FastRawViewer. Maybe not the perfect test. Maybe a better test: exporting from a program, one is exporting a .png (with png settings), but enters .JPG as the extension when it asks for a file name.

I recently came across a situation - and I didn't write down the program - where a file would not open because of the upper case file extension.

This is not the case here. These are all JPEG files with .jpg extensions. The two files in question give problems on my Desktop PC, but not on other PCs, which would seem to point to an issue in the Windows environment on this PC. 'Tis a puzzlement.

This is clutching at straws somewhat but it does seem that you have reached this point so...

i. might be worth trying Irfanview (free and my favourite viewer) as it seems reasonably good at reporting file errors etc;
ii. might be worth trying one of the photo rescue programs/apps, they are designed for corrupted disks/cards but might be able to give you a "repaired" version of your files.

None of which explains why they work on one Windows machine and not another of course :-(

Good luck in tracking it down.
