It also appears to have a bug, which might have been reported. If you change the name of the portfolio or collection from i.e. pending Paris to 2016-07-07 Paris, which I do when the collection is completed, then the ics field does not update, even if you invoke the command "Save metadata to file for all out of sync images". The images do not appear to be out of sync because there is no red dot. Only when you mark them and then save, does the portfolio name update itself in the ics field.
Probably not a bad idea to report this to Mantis...
Now in Mantis, which also reports the frequent crashing of PSu when renaming:

I wouldn't combine Auto Synch with synching all images because of the number of images that would be seemingly nearly constantly updating.

Stephen, I'm glad you found the ICS tip useful; you could thank Hert too, for designing ICS (as a safety backup mechanism) in the first place.

I see the ticket is now marked as fixed, but I'm not sure what that means. Is the portfolio or collection renaming going to mark all images therein as OOS?

I am not sure what it means, but presume they will be updated immediately. Hert's comment was:
"Writing changed collection name to xmp is resolved in the next update."

Afaik, the ICS metadata is written when an image gets synchronized. Therefore, updating ICS collection names immediately makes sense only for auto-synch on.

(If auto-sync is off, maybe the images are going to be marked as OOS - or maybe not; barring any explanation from Hert, I guess we'll have to wait and see.)

As Vlad correctly mentions, ICS is written on writing out XMP to the file (sync-write). And with auto-sync switched off, the image goes out of sync (the orange dot icon marker in the lower left corner of a thumb)
