I largely agree with Frank, who provided good advices. On the other hand, if Stephen intends to get renamed duplicates in his catalog (for comparison or whatever reasons), then I wouldn't say his process is inherently wrong. I tried to replicate the import of renamed duplicates (on just a couple of images) and I did not get any freezes.

Stephen, if you're getting freezes whenever you import images, then there may be something wrong with your catalog or setup. What happens if you create a new import profile, or use the Quick Import Wizard? Can you try to import images in a brand new catalog (as advised by Frank)? Do you still get any freezes?

My suggestions might be completely off and if that is the case I apologize. I am trying to help, but perhaps without completely understanding the steps of your workflow, my advice is not all that useful.
@Frank
Thanks for your concern but your presumptions are wrong and it's a pity you did not understand my descriptions because I am doing exactly what you have proposed ;-)

I detailed how I was consolidating the unorganized file naming (which was the output from Aperture) and I am now creating new folders in a uniform structure based on Country, City and Date.

The only exception being that I am integrating the files with my existing database and not creating a new database because I don't believe in splitting databases. PSu is powerful enough to be able to deal with a single database, as I am sure others would agree.

PSu furthermore has an internal number for every file (as most databases do) and that way it manages to cope, even with files which have exactly the same names. Mine mostly do not (excepting maybe some exporting + importing errors, again in connection with migrating from Aperture). Furthermore, Mac copes very well with upper and lower case, even if Windows cannot.

I have now replaced the registry.dat and things are working quite smoothly so far.

Thanks anyway, but the intensive interchange with Vlad possibly made the thread difficult to understand (unless you were Vlad) :-)
Never say never change, but using Mac since 2005. Photo Supreme 3.3.0.2605. I endorse the interoperability of files between applications and systems.
