I can't get this to work ?

When I type Mike Phillips+Morag Phillips in the Top Left Search box I get a result of loads and loads of images in my catalog. It seems to be searching for "Mike Phillips " and "Morag Phillips"
in ALL the text - not just the catalog labels Mike Phillips and Morag Phillips.

How does one just do a Catalog Label Search in the Search Box ? (as oppose to select the catalog label from the tree)

If I just Type Mike Phillips in the search box a list of options comes up And eventually the Catalog Label is displayed - but when I click to select IT and then want to add a + sign and then select Morag Phillips all of a sudden the search runs...
How do I select several catalog labels/ build a quick search query by selecting elements from the drop down.

When you type Mike Philips then your searching for Mike OR Philips; the space is the separator. If you want to search for Mike Philips then enter it like "Mike Philips" (between double quotes for exact searching.

That is correct; you are searching in ALL data. It is possible to search more specific, but then you enter a technical area and you need to know the specifiers (not something a typical user will do).

Some examples;
If you want to search for the text Mike in all Catalog Label data only then try this Mike@PROP
If you want to search for the text Mike in Catalog Label Name data only then try this Mike@PROP.PropName

You also see these qualifiers when you select a suggestion from the drop down list (as displayed when you type in the Search Box). It is then displayed in the Collection Viewer's title area.

How do I select several catalog labels/ build a quick search query by selecting elements from the drop down.

WHen you select from the suggestions, then the query is executed.

Thanks for explaining that. I've been experimenting and I've learned a few things that I think are worth sharing.

I am able to use the "OR" operator in addition to the "+" and "-" operators to perform searches. Curiously, the "AND" and "NOT" operators don't work, you must use "+" or "-". I am also able to group selections together with quotation marks like, "A+B" - "C OR D". This gives me a fair amount of flexibility and is fairly convenient. However; I if I type "A@PROP+B@PROP" (with or without the quotes), I get an empty result set.

Maybe you can expand a little on other ways to optimize the text search feature.

By the way, I love your Tips posts. They are extremely helpful.

a suggestion... When I click an Item from the List that contains two words (eg Mike Phillips) then auto insert the quotation marks. Because its "obvious" that I am searching for that specific term.

Hey, this is a very useful thread, although I'm a bit disappointed by the harsh tone of the discussion.
I just wanted to support Hert on his vision of the problem, it suits me very well, and if you look up my posts from a few years back, I've been making similar requests regarding the search experience. I like the parallel between search engines and search in PSU, I do consider it valid. Having hundreds of thousands of pictures in my archive, I've already given up using a label tree even in IDI, where I also was using the search bar. And now in PSU the search bar works so much faster.
