Hi Baard,

To keep a folder in sync, you can open the "By Folder" catalog view. Right click on your folder and select "Verify Folder". That does a bi-directional folder content comparison and also keeps signatures of your files in the database (hash-keys). The first run may be slower because all the hash keys for your files must be generated.

Hi Baard

Nope - no Watched folder.

Best way to keep in Sync (and its really really effective) is:

Catalog - By Folders - Right Click on the Folder and Verfify

Don't Use the Tools - Verify Catalog Folders unless ALL the sub directories under the Root Drive ( the "C" in c:\my pictures) contain images in the catalog becuase what THAT does is verify every folder under C (in C:\my Pictures) and ask to add ALL the images in all the sub folders.

Have I explained the above correctly and does it make sense ?

What, exactly, does verify do? Does it simply identify which file are out of sync or does it synchronize all files?

Ok, i did it, and this box comes up. What does Ingest Folder mean? Will it copy or move my files, or just import them where they are?

Baard

Ingest means that it will add the images to the catalog.

It will NOT import / move them

The files not found are files in the catalog but can't be found on the disk (in the location that the catalog has for them)

The Files changed are files that the metadata has been changed outside of Supreme and the default option is to import those changes into the catalog.

Those Three Grey Stripes can be clicked on to give options per group

Baard,

It will import them from where they are. In a new update I'll change the term "Ingest" to "Import"

TIP; the menu icon at the group result level (e.g. Folder Not In Catalog) allows you to change the action for all items in that group.

May I Suggest that you DON'T change the Text to Import from Ingest

The word Import in the Supreme context is generally used for the Importer to get images from the card to the disk (Import Wizard, Import) and I just think that changing this to import will confuse. Maybe "Add to Database" if you don't like ingest ?

What do others think ?

It verifies the content of the folder. In the database a signature for every file is stored and on a subsequent verification run the signatures are verified for changes. Then changes are reported back and you can specify what to do with the file; for instance Delete File, Import File, Export to File, etc.

At the same time it verifies if there are new folders on the File System or if folders that are known in the database have been deleted from the file system. Then too you get some appropriate actions to select from.

When I do this, and hit the Start Processing button, the program just freezes!

It may appear to be frozen, but it may still be working all the same.

For example, I made a change in a Catalog label that meant that 25,000+ images needed to be resynced. Although the program showed "Not Responding" in the Title bar, as did Task Manager, it was still working - consuming up to 27% CPU and 0.5GB memory. After 30 minutes of this, the "Synchronize service" activity bar kicked in, the "Not responding" message went away, the CPU usage dropped back to 5%, and disc activity started as the images started to get the metadata resynced.

Now after waiting for 6 hours, Task Manager consuming 0%, and the program still says "Not Responding".

If the Task Manager says that PSU is consuming 0% CPU, then PSU is definitely frozen.

BTW, thinking about this issue - I had an example yesterday when I had created a couple of sub-folders under a folder that was known to PSU. Since these new folders were not listed in the PSU Catalog/Folder view, I right-clicked on the parent folder, and chose Verify Folder.

I got the message asking if I wanted to add the folders to the Catalog, and clicked Start Processing.

As baard has reported, PSU then froze, Task Manager reported that PSU was using 0% CPU and was Not Responding.

I restarted PSU, and found that the two new folders had been added into the Catalog.

Clearly, there are certain conditions where PSU will hang during the processing of new folders, but I don't think it happens every time...
