A Few Questions
First off, thanks for the Mac version, I've been waiting for it. I've used AtomicView as an alternative but it appears they are no longer developing it.
- Does the software read XMPs on Ingest? Mine appears not to. Also, when I try to input a copyright notice in the field and then click apply, the field goes blank. Am I doing something wrong?
- If I set an external application in the Preferences, it does show up in the top bar, but if I go into Preferences again and change something else the external app goes away. It does not seem to be retained in the list. Is the list cleared every time you open the Preferences?
- Overall the interface seems a little sluggish, especially when typing text into fields. Then again my iMAc is about 3-4 years old with 4Gb of memory.
Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

No, that should not happen. Seems to be a bug.- If I set an external application in the Preferences, it does show up in the top bar, but if I go into Preferences again and change something else the external app goes away. It does not seem to be retained in the list. Is the list cleared every time you open the Preferences?
Yes, it should. Does this happen with a specific image type?- Does the software read XMPs on Ingest?

Re: A Few Questions
Hi Tim
INE does not save preference changes - I have reported this to Hert.
I have also reports the copyright not saving problem - mine started off with [] in the copyright field when ingesting NEF's with copyright stuff added by the camera!
Regarding XMP - its reading "some" XMP but seems to struggle with others. I can't get it read Title or Description but is seem to read image content okay. I get the dreaded square brackets !
Thanks

Re: A Few Questions
Sounds like bad news for custom XMP. Full XMP support, especially the eXtensible bit is really one of IDI's major strenghts...Regarding XMP - its reading "some" XMP but seems to struggle with others. Then I also wonder how compatible the Mac version really is. Say, I have been using Win 7 and want to move to Mac, can I take y catalog along???
Cheers,
Frank
Re: A Few Questions
Frank,
EDIT: only from pro|desktop to NE. Unfortunately not the other way.
But I have to say that app is stripped down to some degree so the learning curve isn't that steep as in V5!
IDimagerNE is not going to replace IDimager desktop\pro.
Cheers,
Michaell

Re: A Few Questions
I'm sure others would want to know whether their V5 Personal or Pro SQL catalog can be used in the Mac NE. I would assume that they can even if NE is comparatively stripped down.weidmic wrote:Frank,Yes, you cancan I take y catalog along???

Re: A Few Questions
The version 5 catalog can be converted to INE, but the INE catalog is not backward compatible in version 5, meaning that version 5 can't read the INE catalog. The PC and Mac versions of the INE catalog are binary compatible, meaning the catalog can be taken back and forth between the Mac and the PC (I've done it).

That was the bit of information I wasn't sure about!george wrote:The PC and Mac versions of the INE catalog are binary compatible, meaning the catalog can be taken back and forth between the Mac and the PC (I've done it).
Thanks for clarification George.

Re: A Few Questions
Hi Michael et al.,
Sorry, me don't understand...
IDimager desktop\pro doesn't run on Mac, right?
And NE does not run on Windows, right?
So. How then, is IDE NE (Mac) ever going to replace IDI desktop (Win)???
And: I understand that IDI (Win) right now might be much more powerful than IDI (Mac), but wouldn't it make sense to have the same "power" available in a Mac too?
After all Word for Mac is essentially identical with Word for Mac. Who would get himself a Mac and be excited to finally be able to use IDI but then learn he just gets a downsized, stripped version of what he got used too. Me, not...
I'd expect the same functionality in a Mac as in a PC and given that Mac users are probably more spoiled than Windows users when it comes to functionality of a product, so I would think they'd expect that too.
My five cents

Re: A Few Questions
Frank,
But if you read george's statement
Gr
Dirk.
The public beta is just for the Mac.And NE does not run on Windows, right?
But if you read george's statement
carefully you can see that there must be a PC version of INE floating around. Only the Mac version has the status of public beta...The PC and Mac versions of the INE catalog are binary compatible, meaning the catalog can be taken back and forth between the Mac and the PC (I've done it).

Re: A Few Questions
Hi Dirk,
OK, looks like I am not among the inner circle of IDI acolytes here
What I am getting worried about then is that the old IDI Pro is getting neglected. There are still tons of bugs in the last, 5.1.1.8 release that Hert says are on hold because of the Mac Version. 5.1.1.8 is now about four months old (released November 2011) and it only was a very minor maintenance release...
I understand the need for a minute software outfit like Hert's to prioritize and the Mac market soaring implies IDI will only stay competitive long-term if it runs on Mac too. Still, to me it seems odd to develop a stripped-down version for the Mac alongside IDI Pro and IDI Personal that then also will run on Windows.
So, then we end up with three Windows Versions (Pro, Personal, NE) and among those one for SQLite and another one for SQLServer whereas Mac has only NE?
I thought the logic of getting IDI run on a Mac would be to offer the same functionality, not a lot less. Seems not to make a lot of sense to me. With Lightroom and Aperture both full featured on Mac, I doubt IDI has much of a chance if it does not offer the whole range of features that make it superior to both.
But what do I know
Just curious...

Well, I guess I just thought it meant you could move the catalogs back and forth, but I guess you are right that it implies a Windows version as well...The PC and Mac versions of the INE catalog are binary compatible, meaning the catalog can be taken back and forth between the Mac and the PC (I've done it).
