Hardcopy Photo Books?

I'm using Portfolios to gather photos that I want to use to make hard copy photo books. But since portfolios don't store the actual images, doesn't that mean that I'll have to back to my physical drive and search for each of the photos there to upload to a service that makes photo books? Or is there some way that PSU can do that for me? Or is PSU intended for digital projects only and not print project?

Sorry if these are dumb questions; I still have a lot to learn about PSU.

In PSU you could select all the pictures in the portfolio then use share->copy* to copy these files to a temporary folder, so you have all the files together for the photobook.**

*IIRC the wording correctly, I don't have PSU in front of me.
**Keep in mind you have many options possible within the share dialogue and in particular some of these control whether the images are shared re-sized or full-sized, with metadata, etc. You will find details in PSU's help facilities and they have also been discussed elsewhere in this forum.

Would you not simply select all (or as required) the Images within a portfolio, and then simply use CTRL-P if you wanted to Print them all ? You can then choose printing choices from the Print controls shown ?

The power of PSU is that it manages your images so you don’t need to worry about where they are stored. PSU knows and helps you.

If you need to do something with a single image physical file, I right click the image thumbnail and select “Locate in Windows Explorer”. This opens a new windows explorer with the image selected so I can do whatever I need to do with that image.

More commonly, I use share to export my images to a new location. Share allows you to export one or more images to a destination reformatting the images as required. Share is extremely powerful and is the most common way to get your images out of PSU to use with other tools. Read the “Transfer and Share” manual available in the PSU help menu.

I commonly “share “my images to a local folder and

• renaming the files to the Darwin Core Scientific Name if defined else the Headline followed by the original filename

• removing the GPS location metadata and labelling metadata but leaving all other metadata (anonymising the image location)

• reducing the image size to 2000 pixel on the longest edge

I then use these images from my local transfer folder in exactly the format I require. I have another share defined which does the same but does not reduce the image size and I use whichever share suits my needs at the time. You will create your own set of shares which meets your needs to create your images in the exact format you require. Once I use the shared images, I delete them as they are so easy to share again if required. This means there is only one copy of the image retained.

Share is extremely useful and extremely powerful. Read the manual and make use of its power.

Thank you, everyone! It sounds like the share option is what will work best for me. When I'm ready to upload digital images to a photo service, I'll do that.

I've read all of the manuals a couple of times, but there's so much to this app that it is going to take me awhile to absorb it all. And I've never used a DAM before, so it is new environment, too. I'm impressed by what I've learned so far about it; there's just a lot more to learn. I appreciate all the help that is shared in this forum.

In addition to the great responses that you already received, I'd like to point out that you can also hold down the Alt key (Opt key) and while holding down the Alt key, start a drag/drop operation to an external application.
