Long duration for upgrade v2024 to v2025

Post by tumirnix »

Hi PSU friends,
yesterday evening I started the upgrade of my PSU v2024 installation to v2025. The upgrade took 4:45 h for the 16 GB database file and 244000 images. Initially I thought, that nothing happens, because the CPU usage was at 4-5% only. Only 1 of the 12 cores seemed to be used. After some time I recognized the small changes in the progress bar and let it run over night.

Question: Is that low CPU usage intended?

My PC has a AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core processor @ 3,7GHz, 32 GB RAM and a 2 TB SSD, Win 10 pro (I'm still waiting for some convincing reasons to switch to Win 11, but this is another discussion). The upgrade was done with version 2025.0.3.7454.

I wonder, if my PC is the only one, which took so much time for the upgrade.

Nevertheless, the upgrade was successful and I can start with the investigation of the new features.

Best regards
Martin

Might depend on just how many DB upgrades you missed as I would imagine they might need to be applied in order (??) the most recent ones did take a while and seemed to have two stages at one point.

Upgraded from a PSu V7.x Version to 2025 and can confirm, that this step took a while (also over night ;-). Also very suprising for me, as in all past upgrades everything has been processed within seconds and minutes...
But most important: all went fine, no errors - so just stay calm and rely on the stability of PSu :-) thx Hert!

I have been using Photo Supreme since version 6. I have bought and installed all updates since that one and current v2025. Previous upgrades (from 6->7->2024) were quick (couple of minutes) nad troublesome.

Yesterday I upgraded from 2024 to v2025 and it took approximately 2 hours to upgrade my database. Luckliy, there were no errors but there were moments when I really thought the upgrade process stalled (the progress bar was moving excruciatingly slow).

Granted, the number of photos in my database has increased throughout the last couple of years, but not as much as to make such a significant difference between upgrades (7 -> 2024 vs 2024 ->v2025). Currently I have appox. 38k photos.

All software has been run on the same machine: AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 14" 144Hz Full HD IPS screen.

Everything is working correctly today and I have immediately noticed that the v2025 is much more responsive - I would describe it as "lighter" when you do anything. It starts-up and closes much quicker. Previously the software gave this feeling of being a little sluggish and "overweight"...

Most database upgrades are quick, but that's not always the case, especially when moving to a new major version. AIUI it the difference depends on how radically the database is being restructured / re-indexed. Consequently it's never a good idea to install an update when you're doing (or about to do) something time-critical. Leave it until it can run overnight if it needs to - and make a backup first, just in case.

I just upgraded to v2025 from the latest v2024 and the database upgrade took just on 20 hours to complete. My database is sizable at 448,000 images so a long duration upgrade is not unexpected for me. That is running on windows i7 and SSD but the machine is getting old so not blinding fast. Everyone should allow a bit of time for the database upgrade to complete.

I haven't had much time to play with V2025 yet but it is definitely noticeably snappier in its general operation as noted by others. Definitely significant enough a speed improvement to justify the upgrade price for me.
