I guess it depends a lot on your workflow, over many years we all develop various processes, some would seem convoluted and not use all the facilities that PSU offers but rather hang-overs from previous systems and the needs for mobile working if relevant.
I make use of "Import Folder" (top left menu functions) but based on the Month as described below, existing images in the Catalogue are ignored and only new images appear on screen ready for Labelling and other actions. This might be relevant for you ?
For me I have background Windows batch scripts that look for my cameras in range of WiFi or BT and then transfer any images found into my folder structure on my laptop which is date based, this happens in background, the only time I have to think about it is if I change cards in a camera but those get handled by simply plugging the cards into a spare camera back in my van when I have time this then gets grabbed whilst I'm back out in position/site. However this is most likely unique to the way I work!
Once I get back at the end of an event to the van, I simply use the "Import Folder" with the current Month selected, this then scans the relevant folders for me and imports them into the Catalogue without intervention (whilst I grab a drink and a bite

) These then appear on the screen and I then add relevant common Labels as required to all the images that have just been loaded. After that it all depends on what needs to be done further, like splitting the selected images into various stages of an event, face recognition (I use TTP for mass identification) but then the PSU facilities for individual cases or unidentified faces, these then get moved into separate Event folders under the Web server, once I'm happy then thumbnails are created for web browsing which link from the various Events/Sections there divided into, the thumbnails (not PSU thumbnails) are linked to the full image, during this stage all the images are staged back to my Servers at home. At each stage all the images are Versioned so that I can then locate any image and if necessary re-work or add extra processing of images required. This is the end result normally available about 1-2 hours after an event ends
http://suptog.sphericalvisions.co.uk/ subsequent processing takes place on demand if people want to make use of images or use the Face recognition facilities these are made available on logged in accounts.
