Compacting Database Error Message

Post by Link648099 »

I'm getting a new error message when I compact the database.
Your available disk space is insufficient to compact /Users/GM/Library/Dimager Systems, Inc./ Catalog/photosupreme.thumbs.db
Database file size is 19.2 GB
Required free space is 38.7 GB
Available diskspace on /Users/GM/ is 31 GB
This is unexpected because my available free space on that drive is 147 GB. This is the first time I've had this error.

This is Photo Supreme build 2024.2.2.6647 (just installed today)

Running on a MacBook M1 Pro with the newly released macOS Sequoia 15.0 (just installed yesterday)

macOS Finder reports free space but counts cached files as “free space” while it is not available for applications. Use DiskUtil to see the real free disk space.

Search online on how to clean up the macOS cache files. It should free a lot of space for you.
Does that help?

Hert, thanks for the advice. That seemed to do the trick! I used the app called OnyX to clear the cache and anything else it thought good to delete. Funny enough, my available space dropped a little bit (hanging around 131 GB now) but the process completed without any error messages. So I probably had a lot of cache files eating up space. I wonder if it was due to yesterday's upgrade to Sequoia.

The real problem is the need of more than double of database while compacting.

And the real real problem is the lack of knowledge in database programming as there is obviously no optimisation during runtime.

Sad news for you, Link648099, you chose one of the poorest projects available. Run as long as you didn't pay anything here!!

I've been happily buying this software for almost 15 years. It's the best at what it does and what I need it to do.

Dear msw.photo,

The "real problem" seems to be that you have an axe to grind. Virtually every comment that you made here on the forum is negative. If you don't like the software, fine, don't use it. If you have constructive criticism to contribute, we all welcome that. But insinuating that Hert lacks "knowledge in database programming" is simply offensive.

Personally, I have complained a lot about many aspects of PSu that I didn't like or which I hoped could be improved. But I have always tried to provide constructive suggestions and not venture into personal attacks against the programmer. I know, on the internet everyone seems to think they can just say anything they want these days. That still doesn't mean ranting should just be tolerated.

Again, if you don't like PSu, don't use it. But spare us your counterproductive comments.
Thank you,

Frank
