Image orientation / person in the image

I want to rotate my pictures. This process seems anything but intuitive.

Preliminary information: I have deactivated the automatic rotation of the camera, no information on the orientation is included in the RAW data.

In my case, the portrait format images usually have to be rotated counter-clockwise. In Adobe Bridge / ACR-Modul I rotate the images counterclockwise and they are correctly aligned, other applications such as ACDSee or DxO PhotoLab then display these images correctly aligned.
In my opinion, this corresponds to an industry standard, as the following entry can also be found in the XPM data:

If I now use Photo Supreme to rotate my images, I encounter several problems:
- if I move the mouse over an image and use the two arrows that appear to rotate it, I can see the changes immediately in Photo Supreme. In all other applications, the images remain in their original orientation. In addition, the displayed shortcut ([ or ]) for this rotation does not work (macOS 14.5). If I then rotate the images in other applications such as Adobe Bridge / ACR module, ACDSee or DxO PhotoLab and then refresh the preview in Photo Supreme, the portrait format images are rotated a further 90° counterclockwise.

- if I use the Alignment dropdown in Details -> Recording data and rotate the images counterclockwise as usual, nothing happens at first. I am forced to first select Metadata -> Save metadata to file and then Operations -> Recreate selected thumbnails. However, this results in the images now being rotated clockwise. This clockwise rotation is then also visible in Adobe Bridge / ACR module, ACDSee and DxO PhotoLab.
Now the following entry can be found in the XPM data:

But in order to achieve correct rotation in all applications, I have to select clockwise rotation for counterclockwise optical rotation. This confuses me. I also wonder why two additional steps are necessary in Photo Supreme to display the rotation.

- thirdly, rotations from other applications such as Adbobe Bridge / ACR module, ACDSee and DxO PhotoLab are not recognized in Photo Supreme when checking changes to folders. I have to regenerate all thumbnails at random.

The second problem I have encountered, which can be reproduced regularly, concerns the person in the picture.
After I have rotated an image via Details -> Shooting data -> Orientation, saved the metadata and then generated the preview images again, I add a name in Details -> IPTC extension -> Person in image and confirm the entry with the OK button at the end.

This means that the information about the person in the picture is saved, but also that Photo Supreme no longer reacts and must be terminated immediately via programs.

I also don't understand the auto-suggest of fields such as people in the image. I have now entered several dozen names there. For names that I entered at the beginning, the name appears as a suggestion after I type the first letters of the name. Other names created later that also start like this (e.g. several people with the first name Christian and different surnames) do not appear in the suggestions. I don't understand that.

The easiest is always to use the rotation sensor in the camera.
That aside.

For RAW images, that PSU cannot write, the rotation icons on the thumbs add a rotation to the recipe of the image (it's an editing parameter).
If you want to change the orientation tag in the metadata then change that in the Details Panel -> Technical -> Orientation
PS. If you make orientation changes in other software then don't forget to reimport the metadata in PSU

This can be achieved easier. You don’t have to enter "Person n Image" yourself. PSU will do that for you. And assigned catalog label from the People category automatically ends up as a "Person in Image" metadata entry (unless you make that catalog label private).
Follow the Face Recognition description in the Artificial Intelligence manual. Find the manuals by clicking the ? icon in the left sidebar.

Thinking about this further, the rotation buttons could work better for non-saveable file formats (such as RAW files). Currently PSU always creates a recipe item for such file formats when clicking the thumb rotation buttons...but it would be more transparent when RAW files get their orientation tag updated instead.

One example: if I rotate an image in Photo Supreme and use the small symbols at the bottom of a thumbnail (not working shortcut [ and ] ), then this information about the rotation is not saved in the XMP file? I then found the drop-down menu for the orientation in the shooting data. But the description is the other way round: clockwise it rotates counterclockwise and vice versa. How can that be?
Also, you really have to manually trigger the thumbnail creation again after setting the alignment via the dropdown menu, it really doesn't even update the thumbnail after you have applied the alignment setting.

PSU is completely metadata driven and whenever there is something wrong in the metadata then you will be confronted with this in PSU. The positive thing is that PSU typically allows you to fix such omissions.
How you describe the rotation behavior typically indicates that the orientation tag of the metadata doesn't correctly reflect the orientation of the image pixels. In the Details panel you can check or change the orientation setting.

It could also be that you have discrepancies between Exif and XMP where the Exif orientation and the XMP orientation arte not in-sync. This happens a lot when using tools that don't update all levels of metadata (eg they update Exif but don't update XMP when there). First thing I would do is to make sure that Exif and XMP are in sync. Do that with right click on the thumb -> Metadata -> Convert metadata to XMP.
Then use the Details tab to correct the orientation tag to reflect the original image pixel data.

That is exactly the point why I denounce your way of answering in such a way!!! I have reported a mistake here and the response I get is that I should do something differently. For 18 years, the entry in the XMP file has displayed the image correctly in all apps and then you want to tell me that the error could be anywhere except in your software.


First and foremost, from your point of view, the real user is incapable and must first do something different here and there than the industry standard does.


Instead of accepting the feedback and briefly writing that you will check it again, you immediately went into a defensive posture. And now? Oops. Fix for wrong caption in the Details -> Technical -> Orientation for Counter Clock Wise and Clock Wise

With your behaviour under your user hat, you transport constructive feedback more and more to an emotional level with every post. Instead of perceiving the app as constantly growing and improving, I perceive YOU. You and your way of hiding under the user hat, shirking your responsibility as the founder of IDImager instead of standing up for your product and working FOR your paying users.

I don't care if a bug occurs. I don't care why, I don't care about 5-step workarounds. I care that if I take the trouble to write feedback, that it will be recognised and taken seriously.

I hope you understand that and think about it, otherwise the day will come when you will hardly have any users left.
