thumbnails and compacting

Post by vkfoto »

Should PS be finding missing thumbnails when it is compacting the database?

Compacting the catalog is not checking for missing thumbnails.
On startup PSU24 checks for missing thumbs and previews and will start building them when missing.

Yes, but at startup, I also get an invitation to compact the catalog. Are these mutually exclusive tasks or can they be done at the same time?
I clicked on yes to compact and then thumbnail process started too.

In normal use there should not be a need to compact manually. You'll see recommendations to regularly compact the database, but since v2023 (or was it v7?) this is no longer needed. PSU keeps track of changes and will recommend to compact the catalog whenever that is needed. That is the startup message you are getting.

And you are getting the startup thumbnail building? Then there are still missing thumbnails and previews in your catalog that needs to be built. You can cancel that to delay it for a next run. But in PSU24, at startup, it checks if your catalog is complete by checking for missing thumbs/previews and for incompletely imported images.
I'm actually surprised that there are quite a few older PSU users who had incomplete databases. It is good that PSU24 checks this. Once you get passed that lining up process you will be good to go.

PS. If the timing of the thumb building on startup is inconvenient then you can cancelt it as soon as it appears. The next time it will continue again until you are through the batch.

About running both...the thumb building process may have started but then the catalog database is being compacted or the thumb building will have to wait for the compact to complete. Compact is an exclusive tasks.

As part of the "lining up process", maybe 20 files in total.... I found six TIF files that were corrupt. Not bad considering there are over 180k images as part of the database.

It wasn't until I took the time to catch the file name being scanned at startup was I able to identify... then remove... the damaged TIF files. (they weren't damaged by PSU).

But, it did make me wish for a "search for files marked as damaged" in PSU.
[maybe, this feature is already there, but I missed it?]

Since rectifying the 6 files, seems all is well for me with PDU2024.

Yes I concur on this a list of damaged files would be very helpful! The first few files are missed as the pane opens up gradually the first few are missed the file names are visible after that and you can search for them but the first couple are a problem!
Perhaps an option somewhere to scan for damaged files ? I've pulled down a program called "Bad Peggy" which searches out all image file formatting problems, which gives a file that can then be loaded using "Collect files form file" and have then marked them as "Damaged" so that I can go thru them either to accept as is, repair or delete as required.

I've added a script in States -> From Repository -> With Possible Corruption
(you may need to restart PSU to see it)

This script doesn't check for corruption but returns all images that have no color generated for them...which typically occurs when no thumb could be generated (as is the case with corrupted files).
