people label hierachies
people label hierachies
I was looking at my People category when it occurred to me that it is similar to my family tree program except that the various names are not linked.
Does anyone add a child-parent relationship in their People categories? Since there is only one possible parent value, I'd have to pick either the male or female ancestor line. More trouble than it's worth or an extra value added? A label too far?

Are you talking about the Description field? I meant the Parent field
Re: people label hierachies
I mean the relationship fields as you would have in a Family Tree i.e.;

In addition: if you're into genealogy you can also add birth certificates, adoption records, death certificates, marriage and divorce records, etc as file attachments in PSU24.

When I right click on a People item, near the bottom is a line Relationships > Add Relationship ...G8DHE wrote: 05 Mar 24 19:03 I mean the relationship fields as you would have in a Family Tree i.e.;
that opens a new dialog box.
Is there a manual guide for each field? They seem obvious but I would like to know any possible consequences that might result.
For example, the As and To fields seem to be free-form text boxes.
How and where are values in this dialog used?
Re: people label hierachies
Not sure I have ever looked in the Manual for this! As you say they are pretty obvious, and can be used in any way you want. The text can be anything you choose to type not fixed designations which makes sense as you don't have to worry about language constraints in the text, merely the meaning of the field which won't change.

Re: people label hierachies
They are indeed free-form. You can edit them any time to change what they say (husband -> ex husband, or whatever, so there's no risk in experimenting. They show up in G8DHE's example as the part in square brackets, e.g. [Mother] [Son].vkfoto wrote: 06 Mar 24 3:28 For example, the As and To fields seem to be free-form text boxes.

I also use PSU's relationships for genealogy, and some people have many relationships - father, son, eldest brother, youngest sister, adopted daughter, mother, etc.
When you've got your head around how it works, it's worth knowing that you can use it outside genealogy. In particular, to apply multiple related labels to an image with a single click. That's described here, together with some other explanations that may help you: Feature explained: Apply multiple related labels with one click
Re: people label hierachies
will have to give this a closer look
Re: people label hierachies
Off-topic, but may I ask if you have any recommendations for family tree programs? The one I used to use has been defunct for many years and I still haven't found a replacement I like!vkfoto wrote: 05 Mar 24 16:45 I was looking at my People category when it occurred to me that it is similar to my family tree program

Re: people label hierachies
I've been using Family Tree Maker for many years (since 1995) through all of its iterations and have found it a good tool to help organize all the relationships between the many family members.snowman1 wrote: 07 Mar 24 14:29Off-topic, but may I ask if you have any recommendations for family tree programs? Re: people label hierachies
back on topic
I've made a few relationships between fictitious family to see how I might use this.
Not sure about the utility. Just because two people are related, I don't always want to have the other person associated with an image they are not in.
Is there a way to export the relationship matrix? I see the image above in the post by Geoff Mather (G8DHE) but can't find where that is done in PS.

Re: people label hierachies
Not sure there is a way to export what you call the relationship matrix, my image was just a screen grab of the expanded "People section".
