Photo Supreme V2024 is released

Post by Hert »

I am proud that I can announce that version 2024 is released. Among others, this upgrade adds some pretty cool new features like Face Recognition, a new innovation: Image Attachments and more.

Details about v2024 can be found here:

Thanks Hert!

I've already purchased and downloaded it. Super excited about face recognition and being able to write metadata to HEIC images.

In my initial testing I noticed catalog labels and some other metadata weren't getting embedded in HEIC images.

Is that expected?

Thank you all.

In v2023 the metadata for HEIC files would be written as a XMP sidecar file. v2024 will not remove existing sidecar files.

You could use this approach:
1. In Types, select HEIC
2. Select all files (try with a few first)
3. Right click on a selected file and select "Run Script from Repository -> Metadata -> Import from sidecar XMP file".
4. If you have auto sync switched on then that will update the HEIC files, if not, then use Ctrl+S (Windows)/Cmd+S (macOS) to update the files

After that you should see the timestamp of the HEIC files change, meaning that the file was updated.
Now you should be able to delete the XMP sidecar files for these HEIC files.

Again, try with a few files first. Then do it in bulk

I'll upgrade because I want to support the development of PS but I'm a little underwhelmed by the new features. It seems the last 2 versions really haven't added much that I use regularly. Improved performance is always nice but I was hoping for more.

Hi Wesstl,
rather than complaining that there aren't too many new features in the new version, perhaps be a bit more constructive? What specifically are you looking for that the new version doesn't offer?

My personal take:
At a certain stage software is basically mature. Take Microsoft Word. Word 2003 essentially does everything a simple word processing program needs to do. Then, with the new version Microsoft introduced their famous ribbons, a radically new interface without any additional benefits at all, no more functionality, just a new look. And now Word online in the cloud? Who does actually need that.
Adobe Photoshop - the same CS6 does almost everything that the newer versions can do. Only, the newer versions now make you pay for a subscription.

So, at a certain point software doesn't necessarily get any better, but software companies still advertise them as the next best thing.

I don't think PSu is quite there yet.

But again, what I personally would much like to see is less "bells & whistles", but some loose ends tied-up. For example, in version 2023 I am not particularly fond of the new colored look of version sets. I much preferred the old tabs, but fine, a design change. Still, there was a constructive discussion how versioning might generally be improved by adding more flexibility to display them. Not seeing that in the list of new features I find disappointing. It is nothing spectacular, but for me would make a huge difference.

Yet, the fancy stuff is what sells. I hardly use my catalog to manage images of people. But I am sure a LOT of users will very much welcome face recognition. So, I can see that making this work is a high priority.
I do love, that synonyms can now be written to XMP too. For me that is very useful.
The attachment feature, not sure...
Deduplicator, hhhm...
Integrated Web Server - now that could become a really, really useful feature.

So, again, I do think there is more potential. Just perhaps make some suggestions what you really miss and would love to see rather than saying you are underwhelmed.

Hert,

I think I figured it out. It worked correctly the way the way you described and the way I first did it (Right Click - Metadata - Save Metadata To File). I was using Preview's Inspector feature on Mac OSX to look at the metadata and it's a bit...sparse. It showed all the embedded data I wanted for JPGs, but not for HEICs. So I used a third party metadata viewer and I saw all the expected metadata I wanted saved in the HEIC file! I also reimported the HEIC photos into PS2024 and all the metadata was there too!

So I want to give you a MASSIVE thank you for this release! That's one of the major features I've been wanting for years, and I'm super happy to see it!

Follow up question: Know any way I can embed metadata in video files like MPG, MOV, and MP4?

Quick update on my HEIC embedding project:

Hert, your method of running the script seems to do well with small amounts of files, maybe a dozen or two. I tried it on all my HEIC files (about 4,000) multiple times and it would hang and not do anything (spinning beach ball). Tried it on about 900 and it would do the same. I let it sit for a few hours and it only modified one or two files then stopped.

The Right Click - Save Metadata to File option works beautifully though. I selected all 4,000 images and it's now going through them all embedding the metadata without a hitch. I made sure to have the "According to the XMP Standard" selected in the Synchronize Settings section of the program settings too.

Before I delete any XMP files I'll do a random sampling and make sure everything's embedded, but it's looking really good so far.

Again, THANK YOU!

PSU will not write embedded to MPG/MOV/MP4 yet.

I installed V2024 trial yesterday with some trepidation due to the large amount of issues reported on this forum but I can report a very different experience.

The upgrade was extremely fast and painless. I haven't found any issues yet after 6 hours plus of testing, so for me, a painless upgrade. I have over 407,000 photos in my catalogue so I expected a slow upgrade, but no issues at all and the database upgrade was under 60 seconds.

I must congratulate Hert on the AI Face Detection. This works surprisingly well and is extremely fast. A brilliant and very useful addition. I must say that while AI face detection works flawlessly 99% of the time, it occasionally makes some very dumb mistakes so you need to keep any eye on it. I also have a lot of photos of my dogs and it occasionally correctly detects the dog face and dog identity. Maybe this AI facial detection will expand to pets and other things in the future. (Hint, hint, Hert.)

Overall, I am extremely happy with this new version and the AI Face Detection in particular. As a bonus, the new version also seems to be quicker overall although I cannot supply any data to verify this. I am very happy with this new version and will be paying my upgrade money shortly...

I installed the V2024 upgrade with some apprehension. It turned out to be fast and painless. My computer is a MacBookPro M1 running OSX Somona.
