New feature request Backup option when upgrade involves a DB change ?

Post by G8DHE »

Submitted on Mantis https://mantis.idimager.com/view.php?id=3490

At present when an upgrade is made it is not until the program is installed and the option to Update the DB or Exit is given, when the new version runs that it is apparent that a DB change is involved in the upgrade!

Would it be possible to give a 3rd option to backup current database (maybe without compacting ?) as otherwise it means exiting, re-installing the previous version doing a backup then going back thru the upgrade again ? Otherwise people maybe tempted to upgrade without a backup ........ whilst I've never had a problem, it is always chancing it a bit ....

What do others think ? Perhaps upvote the Mantis request if you agree ?

Absolutely! Over the years, this has always worried me a bit (although, like the OP, I have never encountered a problem with the updates).

Apart from the feature request:
if you get a notification for a new version then don't install it yet.
First create a backup. Then get and install the update.

This is best practice, regardless if there's a database change or not.
