Technical Metadata: where to store it
Technical Metadata: where to store it
In the description of my pictures, I use technical metadata like "(1/160 - f10.0 - 35.6 mm - 12.59 m - AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR)". I create this information from RAW/exif and I store it in the xmp sidecar in xmp:photoshop:SupplementalCategories.
Is there a better place to store this information ?

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
One thing that I never recommend is that you enter data in fields that are not intended for that purpose.
Back to your question. Not sure what you're asking. Do you want that formatted gathering of metadata as a single string in the metadata?
You can enter macro commands in a metadata field (like description) and that way you can construct such a string like the one you show

@EtMRS
that the mentioned data are included in the technical data stored by the camera and are automatically processed by PSU, is clear?
See details.

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
What just came to mind and which may help you.
There is a script that you can use to enter Lens Information.
1. Right click on an image thumbnail
2. Select Run Script from Repository -> Metadata -> Edit Lens Information.
This script will enter the details in the designated metadata fields.

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
First of all, I would like to ask you to answer to the question. How to store this technical description ?
@ BertiIrmo :
Where can I find the the Focus Distance, please ?
@ Hert : If I don't work like you say, maybe it's because not all info are available....

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
There is no need to store the Focus Distance as it is part of the makernotes - but apparently only for Nikon cameras. As far as I can judge it the field is not provided by PSU as a makro; perhaps Hert could double check it?
I hope you are aware of the limited reliability especially of this field? (https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=7852.0)

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
The topic starter didn’t answer my question if he would like to store such a string in the metadata description. I also stated that if that is what he/she wants then he/she can enter the macros there that build such a string
Richt click in a metadata field to get quick entries to fields, which are then entered as a macro.

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
I write : "In the description of my pictures, I use technical metadata like "(1/160 - f10.0 - 35.6 mm - 12.59 m - AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR)"".
I ask "where to store", You answer "How to create it". It's like a misunderstanding.
When PSu user send a picture to an other application, are you really sure that the other application is able to read the PSu macro to construct this technical description ? And what if the other application, like a web site, use only IPTC/title, IPTC(IIM)/description, ....
@ Bimo : we use this with exiftoll since 2005 with D100, D80, D800, D810 and D850 and it's perfect.

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
Macros become plain text as soon as you save the metadata.
Try it. Right click in the description field and make your picks to construct your string. Once you have found the perfect macros for your string, you can create a Detail Profile so the you can quickly apply it
As mentioned in another topic: metadata (including description) is also written as IIM, where applicable

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
where to store? Personally I would use a custom field for that. Because that’s what it is. Then again, if you need it in IIM then you will have to misuse an XMP field that maps to IIM. Any will do, and the one you now picked is as good as any

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
Ps. You can do all of this in PSU without using extra 3rd party tools.

Re: Technical Metadata: where to store it
Hert,
Thanks for your answer. Custom field are available for other application in XMP sidecar ?
Of course, I use macro, but not for technical description. If I need technical metadata in the description field, I just use %xmp:photoshop:Headline
%xmp:photoshop:SupplementalCategories. It's faster than adding technical data one by one and so, I am sure the description format is always the same.
Working so, it's not extra work : for every new picture, we use this schema : Geolocation > Exiftool script > DAM > RAW developer. And so, technical description is only1 line in the exiftool argument file.
