Is it possible to "link" non-hierarchial catalog labels?

Post by Shutter Bug »

I'm trying to figure out if I can get PSU to do some of my work for me. ;) The alternate way to put it is ... can I get PSU to remember to put in labels that I am likely to forget. ;)

I've read the cataloging manual multiple times. I know catalog labels give you the ability to auto-assign the parents up the hierarchy (like adding New York City, New York, United States automatically when you add Statue of Liberty). I also know that you can select a detail profile to add when you assign a certain label. However, neither of those are quite what I'm looking for.

There are two things I'm trying to see if PSU can do for me:

1) Is it possible automatically assign other labels that aren't in the same hierarchy when a certain label is assigned?

For a simple example, I have a structure in the categories for "Context". This is how I designate that a photo is a Personal photo, professional photo, volunteer photo (I take photos of events for some groups I volunteer with) and "photo play" photos (me just taking photos as a part of my photography hobby vs a family event or a volunteer gig). I have some keywords associated with my photo play photos. What I would like to do is anytime I select one of those keywords/catalog labels, I want it to automatically make the Context to be the Photo Play label as well? If it was in the same hierarchy, I could just do that as "assign parents" in the config, but it's not. I know I could do Label Set Memberships but that would be a lot as it's a many-to-one relationship (adding the Context -> Photo Play anytime I add any one of a group of keywords). Plus, I would like it to be automatic so I don't have to remember to manually assign them. I can't do it on import either b/c often my photo play photos are mixed in with other "shoots" (like I'll take some cloud shots while I'm doing some volunteer photography event) so they don't get designated as a photo play photo on import because that 'shoot' is mostly volunteer photos. I'm trying to see if PSU can automatically change the context for me once I assign a keyword/catalog label that identifies it as a Context of photo play photo, as I'm not good at remembering to do that. This is a simple example with just a many-to-one. It's often a many-to-several (when I add one of these 20 keywords, I want to add these 3 catalog labels automatically) Is there a way to do this?

2) This question is like the above but the "trigger" is something in the detail section vs. catalog labels. Is there a way to have PSU automatically assign a catalog label when you assign a color label or a star rating or assign a catalog label anytime a certain location is entered (like adding a Category of "Outing" every time I take photos at the Science Museum) or something like that? Another example would be, when I assign color label red I want it to automatically add a catalog label/keyword that says "publish" or when the creator is Sally, make the context catalog label be Volunteer.

I don't know if it can do any of that but they would be useful to help automate some tasks and keep me from forgetting to do things.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Create a relationship between two Catalog Labels in in the relationship definition you can opt to auto-assign the related label. Add a relationship by right clicking on the Catalog Label and select Relationships -> Add Relationship
2) This question is like the above but the "trigger" is something in the detail section vs. catalog labels
You cannot do that

I'm glad #1 is possible. Thanks Hert!

I tried Adding a Relationship as you described but I wasn't sure what to put in the "As" and "To" fields (I even tried the Tips system but that added no detail unfortunately). It kind of made me have flashbacks to those dreaded exam questions like ... "train is to tracks as boat is to ______". ;)

I guessed Parent/Child but I wasn't sure what bearing that had on anything and it didn't quite make sense because they are really Peers more than parent/child since they are different top level categories. Can you explain how to choose which is the parent and which is the child when they are really peers and what that choice affects please?

I did check the cataloging manual and didn't see anything about relationships with the exception of how you reference it in a search.

#2 It's as bummer that this isn't possible. It sounds complicated to implement but that would be an awesome feature if it were doable. ;)

This will help: Feature explained: Apply multiple related labels with one click

You can use relationships if you create a catalog label for the location and apply that to the image - I do it all the time for notable places. If you include the Geo coordinates it can speed up labeling too - see here.
