I used to double click, or Shift click to open a thumbnail in the viewer. Shift-click no longer appears to be working and double click leaves PSU and opens the thumb in the default Windows 10 image viewer. I would like to stay in PSU to quickly view images in the folder to cull the bad images... I looked all over for an "Options" tab in the viewer but it does not seem to be there anymore.

The above issue was on my xps 13 laptop.
Went to my xps Desktop, and this problem did not exist??? It worked perfectly there!
Deleted PSU and reinstalled on my laptop.
Restored from my backup...
Same problem.
A couple of months ago I noticed that that my version 6 update created a new catalog file called photosupreme.cat.db. My long time catalog file was idimager.cat.db. Reading the forum, I noticed others went through this and were advised to rename the idimager.cat.db Catalog to photosupreme.cat.db. But I kept my original catalog file, and just copied it to a new version with a new name. Good thing...
Changed my catalog to indimager.cat.db, and PSU instantly regained it's functionality! I was able to use the embedded viewer just like the old days. So I re imported a couple of months of library updates, and I'm back in business!
Must have been a corrupted catalog file I guess, but it's back to being in business...

Use the photosupreme.cat.db file.
You probably changed the preference on how an image should be opened. Preferences are stored in the database, hence why it can be different opening your old catalog

I've compared the PSU Preferences in idimager.cat.db and photosupreme.cat.db and they are identical. The setting "Images open" in both say "Embedded Viewer". I like to use FastPictureViewer as my Windows default photo viewer. With catalog photosupreme.cat.db when I double click on an image in the viewer, the full screen view opens in my default Windows photo viewer instead of the PSU embedded viewer. I changed my Windows default photo viewer to Windows Photo instead I and I got same result.

I get much the same result, NEF files with the Nikon codec loaded into Windows now open in the Windows viewer, previously they opened in the embedded viewer. However If I open the matching JPG then that opens in the embedded viewer and I can then move between versions including the NEF file in the embedded version. The only problem I get is Portrait images are not rotated correctly in the embedded viewer whilst they are rotated correctly in the Windows viewer! I just live with it

That indicates that you have the NEF extension added as a "Other"-Image format in the preferences. That's a typical indicator for inconsistency between Exif and XMP. PSU always uses XMP orientation. Windows probably uses the older Exif orientation and so you get different results. If there's a discrepancy between Exif and XMP then you can get different results. In PSU you can fix inconsistencies by using right click -> Metadata -> Convert Metadata to XMP. That will convert the old Exif back to XMP, making sure that both have the same data.The only problem I get is Portrait images are not rotated correctly in the embedded viewer whilst they are rotated correctly in the Windows viewer! I just live with it
(PS. I'm assuming that you didn't rotate the image in PSU. ie that there's no recipe for that image in PSU, nor that there's an edit rotation parameter from DxO (DOP file), Lightroom (crs XMP schema), or CaptureOne (cos file)...because those can also explain differences)

Ah, yes on checking a .NEF had been added must check the workstation as well now, and yes a rebuild of the previews then gets the orientations right. It always used to be right but I have a feeling that sometime in the past (upgrade to W10 maybe ?) I reinstalled the codecs and I have afeeling it may have changed then, but its a while ago now!
