Scrambled Metadata

Post by Dismayed »

I was having problems with versioning - it seems the settings were such that I had PSU looking too far from the location of the files that I wanted to have versioned. So I had some version sets that contained unrelated images. I destroyed the version sets, but now some images have over 100 tags where only 2 are correct. What is the best way to clear those tags so that I can retag? Should I remove the files from the catalog? And if I do, will the incorrect tags come back when I re-import?

I'm guessing that you clicked 'version selection files' rather than 'version detection'.

I'd delete the images from within PSU and re-import them from a backup, if you have one. Otherwise delete all the tags and start tagging again?

I'm pretty certain that I was using version detection.

I do have a backup, but I would like to know if I can select images and strip off the tags easily. Some now have over 100 tags assigned, when there should be only a few.

I'm finding files far removed from where I was attempting to version that have over 100 incorrect tags on them. Is there a way to fix this? Do I need to go into the database tables and look for over-tagged records? I'd rather not throw out all of my work and restore all of my photos from backups. And I don't think I'll be writing tags out to files again.

There's no way that I know of reversing them back to how they were originally tagged without restoring the correctly tagged images from backups.

I could restore a backup of my database and write out to the files. Or I may look at the tags of the over-tagged files and search the catalog to identify all of the errant tags. That may save some of the work that I've put in thus far. But I certainly will not write metadata back to files as a matter of routing until i understand how this happened.

I did a quick category search and discover 4,206 mis-tagged files. They each have 109 tags. Could I not select all and remove one tag at a time for the group? And then write the metadata to the files?

Yes, you can. I had a similar issue and it worked.

This clean-up was going very slowly, so I updated the PostgreSQL config files based on Hert's recommendations (and to account for bumping up my RAM last week from 16 GB to 32 GB). What a difference! Cleaning up the tags is much faster now.

I have quite a few files to re-tag, but that's better than mis-tagged files. Progress.
