Cannot sort manually

Post by Mark »

I am totally lost on manually sorting.

From reading the manual and forums, I would have thought I could drag a thumbnail to any position. Yet, as soon as I click on an image to drag I get the circle/slash icon. Moving it over another thumbnail gives me the + icon. I think that has to do with stacking? (I don't understand Stacking yet, either, so I'm trying to avoid that).

This is with No Sorting selected in the View drop down.
Doesn't matter if I'm in a Collection, the Colors tab, the Folders tab, or anywhere else.
I have also tried Command-(arrows)(home)(end), etc. Nothing has worked to date.

So I'm missing something but can't figure out what it is. I've had Photo Supreme for over a year now and would really like to finally be able to do this.
I appreciate any help!

Edited to add:
I get the following error when viewing a Collection, View: No Sorting, and using Command-L or R arrow:
You cannot change position when the catalog is displayed hierarchical.
I don't know what that means.

When you click the counter then you get a hierarchical result (the node with all lower level nodes).

Back to manual sorting. You can sort manually in portfolio collections. Also see: https://youtu.be/yMrk2HH_zKw

I had no idea you'd created a YouTube channel. This will help a lot, thank you!

It took me a while to figure out what you meant by "counter" and "nodes" but I've got it now and it works as you show in the video. Looking forward to watching more of those. I'd love to see one on stacks.

Has manual sort been dropped from v6?

Just tested - manual sort still works for portfolios. AFAIK this is the only place where you can manually sort.

Would be a nice feature to also be able to manually sort at anytime and not only in portfolios

I'm using build 3587 with No Sorting checked. I don't see a Sort Manually in the pop up list.
When I drag one image to the inside edge of another, that image is highlighted with a border and the cursor has the green +. This is whether it's a dynamic or standard collection. I expect it to highlight the space I'm hovering over—but it's just the green +.

Yes, I would very much like to be able to manually sort in any view as well.

We all have different ways of using PS, but personally I use folders for managing the images - there are several ways of sorting (more than I ever use), the option of filtering using multiple criteria, and the ability to create multiple sub-folders.

For presentation purposes I use portfolios, where you can indeed manually sort images into any sequence that you wish to show them.

Maybe working that way would solve the problem? If not, what are you actually trying to achieve by manual sorting?

In the portfolio view No Sorting is the same as Sort Manually. Confusing naming in my opinion.

Using build 6.7.2.4117 (on Catalina), I still have problems with manual sorting in portfolios. Same as in the original post—I get the + symbol almost every time. Once in a *very* rare while, the side of the thumbnail will highlight as I move another thumbnail over it. This is true whether it's a standard or dynamic collection.

Make sure to click the portfolio collection name, not the counter.
Fyi, clicking any counter in PSU gives a flattened (recursive) view and in the flattened view you cannot sort manually

Thanks. Yes, only those images in the specific collection are being shown.

Make sure to click the portfolio collection name, not the counter.
FYI; Clicking any counter in PSU is always a hierarchical/recursive query...regardless if there are subs or not. And in a hierarchical query you cannot sort the thumbs manually.
So so NOT click the counter but the collection's name.

Did you try that?
