(how) does osx finder tags to keyword work?

Post by lerone »

hello,

I have
- selected the preset 'Merge macOS tags as keywords (if available)'
- verified that osx tag 'xxx' is present in the image file
- set up the catalog category 'xxx' (under Miscellaneous)
- and made sure that 'create keyword for this label' is selected within 'Metadata settings' of the category label

but PS doesn´t seem to process the osx tag 'xxx' anywhere into category hierarchy (or the photo metadata)

am I overlooking something? or is there a way to trace why this function doesn´t seem to work?

thx for help!

To read macOS Tags;

1. Make sure your file has macOS Tags on the file system ;)
2. Make sure that you've enabled the macOS preference in the Synchronize Read settings (should be ticked by default)
3. Import the file (if the file is already imported then press Cmd+Opt+S to manually re-read the metadata to catalog)

If no catalog label exist with the same name as the macOS tag then a new catalog label is created in Miscellaneous.

hey Hert,

thx for swift reply!
I was giving my setup, as I am exactly following these steps :-)
also tried the metadata-file-sync before...

and the image keyword/category label does definitively *not* register there, *even though the tag/category is already present.
- but even when I delete the label in the PS-catalog nothing appears there, neither after sync nor on first/original import.

as said: the tag is definitively therer – I can see it in Finder (after calling up the finder-location via PS), and in other apps

any ideas what could be wrong?
thx again!

...wondering, if am I the only one on this? :-}
in case this works for others, that would also be an appreciated info, as then I might make that the starting point of my search.
– currently it´s a little 'itchy', knowing there is this fantastic feature, but it somehow doesn´t work :-D

thx for any callback!
o

---

edit/adding: I now see the finder tag under keywords in the image information pane! I guess it could be related to update of OSX.
but then, the 'keyword' doesn´t show up in the catalog labels – is this the standard behaviour?
(the image doesn´t even register in the particular category, if I manually setup a label-name identical to the tag, and update via reading metadata from file)

hey Hert,

thx for pointing out!
– yes, I saw this, and read it with interest as it came so short after my enquiry.

if I understand correctly that case is the other way round as "Al_M" says his "objective is to have my label structure written as individual keywords into macOS Tags."
indeed writing the keywords simultaneouslys into the finder tags works like a charm for me already. something I am very happy about.

what I understood is that PSU can also read the tags and automatically transfer/write them into the IPTC keywords (and even better possibly into PSU´s label catalog)
– do I misunderstand the 'read'-setting ('Merge macOS Tags as keywords') in this case?

If you set the reading of macOS tags ON then on import (or press Cmd+Opt+S to manually read) the macOS tags will be added to the Keywords in the catalog. And when you have writing of macOS tags switched on, then on writing metadata (Cmd+S) the Keywords are written to the file.
So *after* writing metadata, the keywords in the file are updated.

thx again Hert for looking at this! I appreciate.

I think I understand the presets and the normal sequence of things.

but (it seems)...

... simply doesn´t work – at least in my case.

I can see the keywords in the image detail pane. but they do not show up in the PSU catalog as labels.
and that is even though I have set the presets "Merge keywords with existing Catalog labels" (+ of course "Merge macOS Tags as keywords")
(- see attachments)

[– btw: you might want a mini-correction in german settings where the translation for ""Merge keywords with existing Catalog labels" is misspelled + should read "Stichwörter mit vorhandenen Katalog-*Labeln* verbinden" (not "Katalog-Labnel")

Can you try this with build 2925? Download and install it from the website.

Hert,

thx for all that! works like a breeze now – and that helps very much for several workflows – and makes PSU even more unique in Metadata!

one afterthought, maybe for consideration as to feasibility:
currently the new keyword (from read tags) seems always to be added / updated under 'Miscellaneous' as parent category. that seems to also happen if I re-order/assign a keyword to another parent category in a prior case.
so in my case, whenever I add new images PSU adds the keyword from tag a second time, now always under 'Miscellaneous'
I think that behavior will probably rarely be the desired one, as it potentially produces a) duplicate labels b) clutter (in the ''Miscellaneous' category).

I can say for my case for sure.
– but there is of course a very comfortable 'workaround' by the unique "relation"-feature; so I can totally live with that doing some extra taxonomy work.
but I think, this should be a case for consideration / review (or maybe more user input).

thx again + best!
