Sorting order changes by itself

Post by Jesperben »

I have encountered a new, annoying behaviour with the sorting order - I hope some of you have a solution.

I work in Folders-view. I select multiple folders, I sort the files after Photo date. I move some of the pictures to another folder - and after the move the sorting order instantly change to File Name without any notice.

This change happens about 50 percent of the times, the rest of the times there is no change.

I am moving a lot of pictures to a new folder structure, so I would be very happy if anybody has a solution.

Thank you
Jesper

I can't help directly as I use a file naming convention that incorporates the file date; among the advantages is that the operating system (and PSU) then sort them in date order by default. Maybe that's something that you could consider for new files? There are some threads on the topic, such as viewtopic.php?f=57&t=23634&p=107862

It's possible that someone could come up with a script that can rename existing files using the dates from the file metadata, if you choose to go that way.

When you change the sort order when multiple folders are selected then that is not persisted. Select 1 folder and change the sort order and then the sort order for that folder will be persisted.

Aha, that explains the behaviour. Would be nice to have both, but this wíll have to do.

Thank you for the answer, Hert.

Mke, I don't disagree with your file naming convention. But almost all of my files are scans of old photos, so I can only date them one by one in my work through the mountain.

I have a similar mountain that I'm very slowly working through! My solution is to sort them in separate folders by year (and by month / event if known), and sometimes by approximate decade, then batch-date them. So I have many in the format 192Xmmdd, or c1920mmdd. Then work through them to update the individual filenames more accurately, where I have more information and when I have the time.

On a related note, it would be useful to be able to set the default sorting. For example my preference would be to set the default so that Portfolios always sort by Photo Date, currently I do that manually for every Portfolio created (they usually have images from multiple devices so filenames are non-sequential).
