Since this capability is one of many items in the long list of enhancements and improvements in v5, I thought I'd post this thread to highlight it.
Here's how it works:
Right click on a new or existing item in the Catalog Tree, and select 'Relationships' » 'Add Relationship'
This will bring up a revised dialog box that looks like this:
.
- 'Name' is the catalog item you right-clicked on - in my case 'Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral', which is in my 'Places' hierarchy (under the City of Liverpool)
- 'Relates to' is the related item - in my case the building type 'cathedral' in my 'built environment' hierarchy (applied to all images of cathedrals)
- 'As' and 'To' are obvious in this case (see note below*) so could be blank - however as they're compulsory I've just added a dot
- ...and I've checked the first check box before hitting OK
As a bonus, while the relationships in the catalog tree look just as they did in previous versions...
. .
...a new function has been added in v5 - those blue arrows are now hyperlinked. Click on an arrow and you'll be taken to that item in the tree, from where you can modify it, browse the images or follow other hyperlinks elsewhere.
You can still click on the underlined white text to display the related images without leaving your place in the tree, just as you could in previous versions.
*Note: 'As' and 'To':
If you've not previously used the relationships features, it's worth knowing that until now they were generally be used (at least by me) to link people. In such cases 'As' and 'To' are generally used to note the nature of this relationship - 'As mother' 'To daughter', or 'As uncle' 'To nephew'

New functionality along these lines was originally requested in Mantis:

https://mantis.idimager.com/view.php?id=2909 (Hyperlink the existing blue 'relationship' indicator to link to the related catalog item)
