When I try to back up the thumbnail database PSu becomes unresponsive. I can backup the catalog database however if I try to backup both catalog and thumbnails OR just the thumbnails I get the spinning ball. Catalog has been compacted. Only 140 images as I am just starting to add to the catalog so trying to see how things work
Cheers, Mick
Unable to backup Thumbnail database
Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
Hi Mick, Is there sufficient disk space for the thumbs database?
FYI; backup of the database is a file copy operation.

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
There's plenty of disk space, it is only 140 images anyway.
So can I drag and drop the database? If so where is the file locate please?

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
That depends on whether you're on Windows or Mac, or if you created your own catalog.where is the file locate please?
You can enable the login dialog in Preferences-General. Then on startup you'll see the location in the login screen. Afterwards you can disable the login dialog again.

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
Thanks Hert.
The thumbnail catalogue is 6.73GB with only 140 images. The catalog data base is 47.2MB. As I am trying to work out the import process, specifically the profiles and details on import, I have imported and deleted other images from the catalog. I choose "Remove from data base but leave on disc". These deleted images must be in the data base somewhere? would that be correct? How do I rectify this please?
I would like to backup the the catalog and thumbnails from the usual place rather than searching in the folder structure. I am on a mac and the Library is hidden so not that quick to access.
Regards
Mick

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
Backup of the database in the Single User edition is a simple file copy process (PSU tells macOS to copy file from A to B). Why a file copy fails is more or less the usual guessing: disk space on the target drive is not sufficient, no access to the target folder, source file is locked, ...
Tip; you can use Cmd+Shift+G in macOS Finder to quickly access the library folder as follows: ~/Library

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
Is the thumbnail data base size of 6.73GB for 140 images usual?
Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
There is also 750GB free disc space
Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
6.73GB for 140 images is not normal. That sounds like you have a lot more than 140 images in the catalog.
Double check that you you have a backup of the thumbs database safely stored...if so, then delete the thumbs database (not the one in your backup), then start PSU. Then select Tools -> Build Missing Thumbnails and Previews.

Re: Unable to backup Thumbnail database
That did the trick Hert, back down to 221MB and I was able to back it up. Thanks for the help
