Hi,
I am testing on a Drive with only 11Gb of data on it. I add a file to the drive to see how PSU identifies and flags up to the user the presence of a new file.
Relaunch PSU sees no changes shown at all.
I try for Verify Folders and it starts scanning, its still scanning 8 mins later and has done 0.4%, thats going to be 33 mins to scan 11Gb, and thus a staggering 401 days to scan my serious data storage drives of 4.5Tb
I dont need it reforming thumbnails of everything there as it did that when first fed the drive, just need it to look for any changes and show the files, then I decide if they need thumbnailing and labelling.
Others tested are done in a few seconds. Portfolio would say updating database and after a few seconds its spotted changes to 800Gb.
There has to be a better way, what is it please ?

What method to show added files to the drive ?
Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
60 views so far, Is there no one that knows the simple act of finding/identifying added files to a drive ?
we all sometime after acquiring photos and other file types (and PSU is for all files) create, add and move about such files, so how are these found and flagged up for thumbnailing etc ?

Perhaps not all of your images were registered to the database after you did your initial, tiny 11Gb import. It might be worth doing that and possibly the detection of new files will be faster. BTW, some software speeds up after 8 mins, so I would wait a bit.
Never say never change, but using Mac since 2005. Photo Supreme 3.3.0.2605. I endorse the interoperability of files between applications and systems.
Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
Hi,
The scan of G drive was done in the following way which seems to be the offered default and normal way.
I launched photosupreme, a wizard appears with what folder aimed at, I choose G, click import button, it scans, and two lines appear synch and thumbs.
Its done.
I minimise PSu, copy a file to one of the folders on G drive, maximise PSu, nothing showing a change to content , like a bold folder name or colour.
I close photoDupreme and relaunch but still unaware of any additions.
You say there is something else I should have done when doing the initial scan, then such changes would get shown.
Where do I do this registration ?
It is vital that one can see where changes have been made so as to scan the folder, PhotoSupreme identifies all file types, we are always saving files to folders they were opened from, creating new files, saving to whatever location is suitable.
Right click verify folder appears to take as long as the original scan, rather than latch onto changes.
Scared the pants off me today in that I did that on a usb_HDD drive and it displayed most of the folders on that drive as grey with line through them and no number at right, clearly indicating deleted.
If I run verify folder will it just display when done the changed and new files and folders so I can decide which need keywording ?
thanks

Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
Photo Supreme does not 'watch' folders for new files being added.
The best workflow is to use PSu to Import files into the catalog and at the same time to move them into a suitable storage folder. For example, a common workflow is probably to import photographs from cameras or cards (or a holding area on disk). Do this with PSu's excellent importer using the integrated renaming facility to ensure unique filenames, and copying or moving to a suitable location, and you should be ready to go!
Verify folders does a lot of work as it checks that every image file in the selected folder and subfolders is in the catalog, has not changed
(by comparing stored and newly calculated file hashes), and that every file catalogued for the folders still exists on the storage medium. With a large number of files this can take a while.

Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
Hi,
My images are not just camera shots, but scans, internet, CAD, vector progs, pdfs, videos, msoft office, and all sorts.... ad Photosupreme with its aim to catalog all types is in theory ideal. I save from a prog to the folder I open also files into the prog from, and those folders are hierchical in places. I need simply to keep what is a complex structure 'as is' and be told whats where. I have no need for unique numbering as the camera does that.
For images that need keywording I need PSu toshow me whats been added so I can KW anything requiring such.
Extensis Portfolio somehow manged to flag up folders where changes had occurred with bold text to the folder name. No other prog tested can do that. How did they manage it, it used to do that within 10 secs of startup.
However as long as I can get to see the thumbs or icons of anything thats been created or changed I am happy.
How though is this done ?
<<The best workflow is to use PSu to Import files into the catalog and at the same time to move them into a suitable storage folder.>>
so I have been in the course of a week doing excel access cad modeling photoshop etc saving to their own folders., as I must be able to browse to the folders. Everyone saves excel to finance folder of which there are many, dated by year and also subject etc, pics to images hierarchy, CAD to CAD subject folder car boat whatever. How do I import these, it would be verify folder, and in they come, but where they come, there is no indication, how do I at same time move them to a suitable storage folder, then what do I do with those in that storage folder, do I KW them there then where do I put them afterwards as I will have a dual set otherwise.
I would like it that I go command>'new and amended files since last KW session', view what PSu has spotted is younger since my last KWing, regards modified date, KW it, then close PSu.

Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
That would correspond to what is sometimes called watch folders. I am not aware of any facility for that being built into PSu. Verify comes closest, but does much more besides and therefore takes time. Of course, I am just a user on a user-to-user forum but it seems to me that you really want an enterprise document management system. Such things exist but tend to need a specialist implementation team and come with an eye-watering price tag. Good luck!Steve01 wrote: 04 May 18 20:48 I would like it that I go command>'new and amended files since last KW session', view what PSu has spotted is younger since my last KWing, regards modified date, KW it, then close PSu.

Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
Checking only the modified date of the file would *not* be reliable enough to make it in DAM software. There are people who like to fiddle with the modified date, others use version revision software that sets file dates based on when it was checked out, and I could probably come up with more reasons why this isn’t always trustworthy. Verify folder reports changes, ever if the file dates are identical.
But a script could be written that simply scans through a folder structure on the file system and checks if files are changed and buckets them. That would probably work for you but not for others.

Re: What method to show added files to the drive ?
I've never expected PSu to detect an added image to a drive/folder etc... I always use the import process to add images to the Catalog.
I have two import profiles - The first has a detailed profile to import images from an SD card that copies and renames images to my structured catalog, and applies metadata.
My second profile just adds the images to the catalog. I use PSu on my laptop and my desktop. When images are already imported to PSu on my laptop, all metadata and file renaming has already been done. So I just copy the folder to to its proper location on my desktop drive and just add the folder to the catalog on the desktop using the import profile.
If I want to add a few edited images to the catalog from a folder, I can use the Verify folder method to add it to the catalog.
So far this process has worked well in catalog updates..
