I'm a long-time IDimager user trying out Photo Supreme and I encountered some surprises I'd like some help with.
I started by installing PS, setting Synchronize settings (both Write & Read) to enable hierarchical keywords delimited with "|" (for compatibility with my IDI labels), and importing around 15,500 images that I've been managing with IDI. About half way through and an hour into the import PS crashed. Rather than continue the import I looked to see what I had.
First I noticed that a lot of jpg files had today's modification date. In 1 folder 1 jpg file out of 278 was changed. In another folder 6 out of 587 changed, and in a third 11 of 475 were changed. I stopped checking after that. When I looked at the changed files they were slightly larger and had today's date. There was no pattern I could see regarding which files were changed. A quick check of the image and the meta data didn't show any differences but I didn't check exhaustively. It may well be that the newer larger versions of the files are equivalent to the old ones. However my expectation is that a DAM does NOT change image files unless I make a some change and I'm concerned that PS is altering files for unknown reasons in ways that I don't understand.
Second I noticed that a few xmp files were added. In all cases the xmp file was added where there was a raw file only with no associated jpg (or any other) file. This again seemed arbitrary: e.g. in a folder full of cr2 files just a few xmp files were created. Again I'm not sure any damage was done but I'm not sure why PS is creating these files.
Is there a good reason PS is modifying jpg files and adding xmp files when I've made no changes to any of the images? Is this behavior innocuous or not?
Also I don't know why PS crashed. Is that common?
Finally can I just re-import the folder or do I have to be sure not to re-import images that are already imported?

Mike, I can't answer your questions. On import no files should be written. In general, create a folder with a set of copied images to test with. Let's say about 1000 images. Import those and try to get comfortable with how PSU works.

Before reading your post I did more testing and had more problems. I've tested with with both small numbers of images and large and I think I'm comfortable with the PS interface in the areas I'm using. Here's what happened.
First all the images I'm accessing are cataloged using IDI and all the xmp files were created by IDI. On IDI I use hierarchical keywords with the "|" delimiter, so in PS Preferences I enable write & read delimited keywords using delimiter "|". I leave the other preferences alone. This seems consistent with my IDI settings and mostly results in the labels being handled the way I expect. In each case below before testing I delete everything in "C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\IDimager Systems, Inc\Catalog", set the options, and then import. I uninstalled & reinstalled once to see if that helped but it didn't seem to have any benefit. The PS version is 3.3.0.2603 and I'm using a trial license on a new PC with Windows 10 Home, Intel i5-6500, 16 GB memory, 256 GB SSD, and 2 TB HDD.
Here are some tests I've run, not necessarily in this order:
1) I import from folder "E:\Users\Mike\Pictures\Personal\2011" which IDI says contains 4,317 images. 7 minutes into the import Sync is stalled at 46.7% and Thumbnails at 43.6%. Nothing changes for over 15 min. while PS is using around 0.6% CPU and no disk I/O. I close PS & reopen it. Folder view shows 4,313 images & the catalog labels are shown correctly, but many images are missing (because PS was stopped I assume). When viewing labels on an image I get an access violation but PS didn't crash.
2) I import from folder "E:\Users\Mike\Pictures\Personal\2011\2011-10-17 Volleyball" which IDI & PS agree contains 60 images. The import goes fine and I see everything as expected. However one image doesn't have the correct labels: instead it has labels that I use elsewhere and the correct labels are missing.
3) I import folders containing about 26,000 images. About half way through and an hour into the import PS crashes.
I've done more tests than these but these 3 illustrate the major problems. Crashes during large imports are more common than not, stalls sometime occur, sometimes incorrect labels are assigned, and sometimes jpg files are changed and xmp files added in ways that may be correct but I'm not sure.
I don't know why I'm having so much trouble. Possibly the way I'm using labels is unconventional and consequently PS is traversing code paths that are not frequently used. Or maybe there are some different options I need to invoke that will avoid these problems. My PC is brand new, way faster and more capable than anything I've had before, and working flawlessly, so I don't think there's a problem there.
In any case PS is not working correctly for me. Any ideas on how to fix this?
