.DNG & .PSD Thumbnails

Post by DetroitPhotog »

Hello Folks,

I am a new user of PS. On recently importing many .NEFs and .DNGs, I find that PS does not render thumbnails for DNGs from the Leica M-Monochrom. It seems to render thumbnails from M9 DNGs fine, as also .NEF DNGs. Is there something I need to set?

Also, I opened a .NEF in PS CS6 and saved the PSD back into the same folder as the .NEF. Does PS automatically detect a new field in the folder and update the catalog or do I have to import the new .PSD? I could not get PS to automatically detect the new PSD. On manually importing it, I find that the PSD does not have a thumbnail display either.

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks!

To see the new PSD files, click the Folders tab. In Folder View, right click on the folder icon and then select Verify Folder.

I dialog will pop up showing which files have changed and/or new files to be added. Click OK.

PSu will create a new tab (Last Import) showing the newly added files. The thumbnails should be visible.

I can't help with the DNG from the Leica, unfortunately.

A warm welcome to the forum.

You can manually update a thumb with Ctrl-Alt-T (Cmd-Alt-T on Mac)

If the thumbs stay black, then can you send a sample file to support@idimager.com (for instance using a file sharing site like Dropbox or OneDrive or Gdrive)

Thank you

Thanks much for the warm welcome and for your tip - there's a lot to learn and thanks to you, I've learnt how to renew the folder view via "Verify Folder"

Cheers!

Thanks much, Hert! Appreciate your help.

Unfortunately, the Cmd-Alt-T did not render the thumbnail on the PSD. The PSD icon shows a msg - "Stream Read Error (0)", which is reminiscent of some Java errors. Looks like PS is not able to open the PSD. Could size be the issue? My PSD is very large - 1.2 Gig. I did up the file size to the max in PS settings - to 999MB but i suspect that is not enough...

Also, the M-Monochome thumbnails do not display. It is interesting that the OS Finder viewer is able to display M-Monochrome thumbnails, so PS must use it's own rendering engine. I can upload a sample .DNG from the Monochrom if that helps you sort this out.

Cheers!

Is the psd saved with compatibility mode? Only compatible psd files can be rendered because otherwise they are compressed with a proprietary compression from Adobe.

A sample DNG is very welcome

Detroit,

In Photo Shop got to Edit>Preferences and select 'File Handling'

Be sure "Disable compression of PSD and PSB files" is checked.
Next, be sure "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" is set to "Always"
Click 'OK'

You could try saving the file under a new name, import it into PSu, and see if the thumbnail is displayed using Ctrl+Alt-T

I have some very large PSD files on the order of 2 GB, and they display just fine in PSu.
