Version Set display question

Post by david mantripp »

Sorry, another newbie question about Version sets (if that's what they're called), or rather how they're shown.

Sometimes, they show up as closed (i.e the main version only is shown in the thumbnail display), and sometimes all versions are shown as separate thumbnails. This is pretty much like Aperture's Open/Close Stacks, but I can't find any way to control it in Photo Supreme, nor can I see any pattern in how they're sometimes open, sometimes closed.

Not a big deal, really, but it would be nice to understand what's going on!

Hi David

They open as separate thumbnails if you click on the box containing the number of photos. If you only click on the written description, they're shown in sets.

Hi David,

Version sets, or any file that is in a version set will always display with the tabs on the right of the thumbnail so that you can tab through them and see all images in that set from that one spot. When you are viewing a collection of images by "Category", in other words, you are selecting a label or labels to view files that have that label or labels assigned to them, then you will only see only one thumbnail for any version set. If you are viewing your catalog by "Folder", then you will see one thumbnail for each file of the version set that is in the selected folder. This is confusing at first and I remember questioning it myself a long time ago but once you understand it, it makes perfect sense. It is possible that different files in a version set are stored in different folders so it is important to show each file separately when viewing by folder. I believe that folder view is the only time you will see separate thumbnails for separate files in a version set.

It used to be possible to "expand and collapse" the version sets, as you have described in your original post, by using a keyboard shortcut but since V3 introduced tabs, now you can only open the version set in a new tab. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+V (Cmd+Opt+V for Mac). I must say, I preferred it the old way but I'm just one of those old guys who doesn't accept change so easily anymore.

I hope this all make sense to you.

You will also see separate thumbnails for at least some of the files (though not necessarily all of them depending on the situation) in the version set when displaying:
By Date
By certain Catalog States in certain situations such as In Last Import if new versions have been created from an image in the last import.
By File Type if two or more files of the same type are in the version set.
By Rating if two or more files in the version set have the same rating

There are certain situations when thumbnails of all files in the version set are displayed:
By Date
By File Type if all files in the version set are of the same type
Browsing one folder at a time in Folder view when all files of the version set are stored in the same physical folder
Searching for files using criteria that displays all files of the version set
Using "Show More...From this Version Set" (Ctrl+Alt+V)

There may be other situations as I didn't thoroughly test all possibilities.

Thanks for pointing these situations out to us Mike. I guess I never paid very close attention to all of the possible scenarios in which multiple thumbnails for the same version set could appear. I can certainly understand why this would be confusing to a new user.

Hi David,
Just in case you're still interested in the version display, I've uploaded two filtering scripts that could give you some degree of control over the display of sub-versions (that is, restrict the number of shown thumbnails when you don't want or need to see all the sub-versions in the active collection). You could find the scripts here: http://forum.idimager.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=23782
