RAW-convertors (Nikon Capture NX2 replacement)

I can't say whether this is what Peter is talking about or not but when I let Photo Ninja create previews in the _PhotoNinja subfolder, PSU uses that preview file when I view that raw file in PSU. That preview, created by Photo Ninja, is downsized (I think to 1620px on the longest dimension). Since PSU uses that preview to represent that raw file, when I open it in full screen to look at it larger, it is already shown at 100%. I'm assuming that PSU is letting me see the preview file but will no longer let me see the full size preview that was in the raw file.

Like I said, this may or may not be what Peter is talking about because Peter is referring to Capture NX2 not Photo Ninja, but it has caused me to not let Photo Ninja create those preview files in that sub-folder.

I found out that for several directories in my database Capture One Pro can't find several of the photo's at all. In an extreme case of 2008 only 50 of about 250 photos can be found (after trying on different HD's and with newly started sessions.
Until this is solved and explained appropriately -- by COP off course -- this a no-go for COP. As beautiful and versatile as the raw-processing and editing part is .

Let's start looking at DxO.

Also FWIW, my preference is DxO Optics Pro - I've recently upgraded to the new Version 10. Not cheap (for the Elite edition, at least) but great value...

I am new to Photo Supreme, trying it out. I also use DxO Optics as my raw converter. How do you integrate the two in your workflow? Any tips greatly appreciated!

Hi JP. My basic workflow is:

• 1. Create a folder (for finished files) and subfolder (for the RAW files) - that way the images display the way I prefer in Photo Supreme folder view
  2. Copy files from camera to the subfolder using Windows Explorer
  3. Delete any obvious duds in Windows Photo Viewer
  4. Bulk-rename the images using Free Commander (2009 version)
  5. [if time permits] Process the images using DxO, saving the finished files to the parent folder
  6. Import images into Photo Supreme [versioning them if processed] & apply a standard profile in 'details'
  7. Use lightbox on selected files to choose versions to keep / delete (Photo Supreme)
  8. Run a slideshow in Photo Supreme & maybe reprocess a couple of files in DxO
  9. Apply and cascade GEO tags (Photo Supreme)
  10. Catalog files (Photo Supreme)
  11. Backup everything
  12. Delete images from camera
  13. [if no time earlier] Process the images using DxO, import, version, apply profile, cascade GEO tags, make selections, backup

By the way. For some reasson COP can not read a lot of my NEF's. I can not find a consistency in what files it reads and which it doesn't read.
This made me check Lightroom, and that's the way I'll go. I try to see whether working in both DAM's is useful for me. This could be very well the case to access the both new (LR edited) and older photos (Capture NX2 edited).

(For me it was very instructive to work in three very different raw-convertors. Always thought LR was a bit sloppy, but it simply takes a different approach. I learned a lot.)

By the way. For some reasson COP can not read a lot of my NEF's. I can not find a consistency in what files it reads and which it doesn't read.

You can just raise a support case with P1 support (via their website), even if you didn't purchase the product yet. It should just read your nefs without problem.

Personally I'm quite happy to continue my use of Nikon Capture NX2. I expect it to keep working on my Windows 7 machine at least for another couple of years.

If one day I find myself in possesion of a Nikon D750, or a D810, both of which are not supported by Capture NX2 I will turn to a utility by the name of Raw2Nef, developed by Miguel Bañón. It will convert raw files from said cameras into NEFs, which can be read and edited in Capture NX2.

Obviously this will not help anyone not happy with the conversions that Capture NX2 can deliver.

By the way, I found the solution to the problem of NEF-reading. Don't know what it is, but it is solved by saving the elder photos in Capture NX2 again with setting 'compressed
and 'lossles'. solution can be found on the forum of Capture One Pro.
