Working with Label Sets

I supported the request for 'Also assign related labels' But somehow, i do not like the relations is used for this purpose as they are more acting like shortcuts and there is already a method for assigning multiple labels in on operation with Labels sets.

I currently don't use Labels sets even the function is from before V3. Why? I used it as container for holding my family members on a prominent place (like Favorites) in the interface. But i never assign the complete labels set!

I do have many labels that want to typically assign together where one labels is in the format of World Region > Country > Province > City
and the other labels is a promotional name and does not really fit in there.
Example:

Europe > Spain > Alicante (province) > Altea 
Europe > Spain > Costa's > Costa Blanca 

If i create a labels set for all those labels (Altea + Costa Blanca), i'm quickly will lose the overview. I can create a Relation between Altea and Costa Blanca, but this will not assign the label, only list it as suggested. I can only set the the geo coordinates 'Costa Blanca' for to a big radius but this will not follow the coast and can lead to wrong labels

I don't really understand your issue, so I'll explain when Label Sets are helpful to me:
--When I want a particular set of labels to be automatically displayed in one area providing easy access without having to type any of the label names
--When I want to automatically assign all of the labels in a set even though I might then remove some of the labels from the image (because, as an example, adding 8 labels at once and then subtracting 2 is faster than individually adding 6)
--When I want to be reminded of the labels that I should consider assigning to a particular image. This is actually the most important reason I have for using label sets. Such a label set is a huge improvement over having a separate piece of paper or electronic file listing the labels I would want to consider.

My issue is: i don't fully understand how i can implement the use Label sets in my workflow. So the examples you provided are a step in the right direction.

-- The first use for 'Easy access', i understand: I created a Labels set with the family members because they often show up on the images. But then i thought this is not the right use of the label sets when is don't assign them all at once, I have to use the favorites for this.

--The second use, 'automatically assign all labels'. Therefor the labels set where invented when reading the manual. But to assign all labels, i have to open a context menu, and select the first item 'Assign this full labels set'. For a so important use, this is not handy. Is there no shortcut for assign (or revoke when already assigned)

---The third use as 'reminder', i probably to not understand fully:
Do you use this as reminder for labels you always consider for every images? (Then i would use the favorites)
Or do you create a labels set when starting on labeling a specific 'shoot', and the label set is holding the labels that are specific for the shoot, to prevent you forget a label during the labeling. (I use the the Recently used + Nearby + Suggested for this purpose. I probably should created temporary favorites. )

I will evaluate your tip to 'assign all' and the revoke some of them. If the labels set has many labels, this will be a time saver. My biggest label sets currently is holding 4 labels. Without shortcut, assigning one by one is faster.

Maybe i should started a 'Poll' her on the forum to ask who is using the labels sets and how they use them.

In v3 you can now drag the label set title bar onto the images to assign all the labels in set simultaneously - which may help?

On your general point though, I also find them useful for - but limited to - groups of people. Maybe that's just because my photography doesn't suit their use in other ways, but I too would also be interested in how, specifically, others have found a use for them.

If my largest Label Set contained only four labels like yours, I wouldn't use them as regularly as I do for the reasons you explained. I have only two Label Sets containing so few labels and I use each of them to quickly assign all four labels at once pertaining to images that include my wife and/or me. My next smallest Label Set contains eight labels and I have a couple that contain about 50 labels.

I also imagine that people who assign relatively few labels on average per image have far less use for Label Sets. I assign a relatively large number of labels, as was indicated in a thread that captured that data from several of us who participated.

I actually don't use the Favorites category for reasons explained below pertaining mostly to how my mind works. Instead, I established a Label Set named "1 Common Global Labels." That set contains certain labels that I assign at the beginning of my labeling workflow that are to be considered for every image or almost every image. As an example, I indicate that every image is either horizontal, vertical or square, so those labels are included in that set. The number "1" is included in the name of the Label Set to position it at the top of all Label Sets, which helps me adhere to a consistent workflow, which in turn helps prevent me from making errors of omission. I have another Label Set named "2 Favorites." That set essentially serves the purpose of the built-in Favorites. However, the number "2" positions that label set immediately below the the other set already mentioned, which helps keep my workflow consistent. Relative to all of that, I never use the built-in Favorites, Sugested, or Nearby Labels, so my eye quickly skips past all of them to get to my custom Label Sets.

I have no idea. I rarely use keyboard shortcuts so that doesn't matter to me.

I'll explain by example: I specialize in studio photography of glass and wine. When cataloging a photo of wine being poured into a decanter, I assigned 17 catalog labels. I couldn't possibly remember all of the labels I would want to consider without a reminder list. My reminder lists for that photo and others with similar content of wine and glass are the Label Sets "Wine" and "Glass." Relying on the built-in Label Set, "Favorites," wouldn't be effective for me because the labels that apply to wine or glass are favorites only when I'm cataloging that kind of photography, not when I'm cataloging photos taken while hiking in the mountains. Similarly, after cataloging a lot of photos of mountain scenery, the favorites that would apply to photos of wine or glass would no longer be displayed in the built-in "Recently Used" set. Make sense?

Mike, It is as the the Label Sets are specially designed for you. When many labels can be assigned with one drag & drop operation (thanks for the tip Mke), this is great time saver.
For my use, it is less convenient. I would need many Label sets with probably only a few labels in each Label Set. But with so many Labels Sets, i have to scroll more and loosing the overview. This scrolling is disastrous on the speed of assigning labels.

There is a similar method of assigning multiple labels in one operation: Assign the same shortcut to the labels you want to apply together. But I'm not good in remembering that many shortcuts.

You could create a list of your custom shortcuts pertaining to labels. I wonder, though, if taking the time to look up a shortcut would be slower than typing two or three labels or finding them in the "Recently Used" labels.
