Nikon Vertical Images
I'm completely stumped. How do I get vertical thumbnails and larger displays such as in the Light Table to appear vertical in Windows Explorer, Windows Photo Gallery and Photo Supreme? When it displays properly in Supreme it doesn't display properly in Windows and vice versa. I knew how to fix this in IDimager but I can't figure out how to do it in Supreme.

Mike, i probably do not understand you problem right.
If you have a problem with the orientation (rotation), then maybe the orientation in the photo supreme database is not in sync with the orientation in the nef exif. There is no exif viewer in Photo Supreme. You can use Exiftool (ExiftoolGUI) or PhotoME on WindowsOS.
If you have a problem with the raw thumbnails in the Windows Explorer, then you can take a look at the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack
Also Nikon has a codec for Nef

Problems with orientation are commonly a misorientation between Exif and XMP. I don't think that Windows Explorer reads XMP (not sure though).

Oh, Mike. I noticed the Mike Philips has created a script to compare orientations : Compare_Rotation
No idea the script is compatible with V3.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
Thank you to Hert and Lippe but perhaps it will be helpful to more fully explain the details of the issue. The script created by Mike Phillips was actually written for use with IDimager and may or may not work with Supreme V3. Regardless, that script only identifies the image files in which the XMP orientation and EXIF orientation are not the same. (That's due to an issue having to do with post-processing the files using Nikon Capture NX2, not IDimager or Photo Supreme.) I don't need to identify the images, as I know which ones are problematic.
When using IDimager, I was able to simply rebuild the thumbnail and use the right bracket (]) key to correct the orientation. After doing that, the orientation was correct whether displayed in any of the Windows programs that are shipped with the OS or IDimager. Doing that, whether "saving" the recipe or not, doesn't solve the problem when using Photo Supreme. That's in the sense that no matter what I do to correct the orientation, it's not displayed the same in Supreme and the Windows OS.
Does that information give you a clue as to what I need to do? Considering that Supreme is XMP-driven, my hunch is that Capture NX2 is messing up the XMP orientation and that I need to correct that but don't know how to do it. I'm happy to provide a file to everyone if that would help.
Hert: I had forgotten until reading the details of MikeP's script that this has to do with using Nikon Capture NX2. You might want to change the title of this thread to reflect that detail.

Regarding Hert's "Full EXIF Dump" script, what exactly happens when the script "dumps" the EXIF metadata. I don't know what the term, "dump," means in this context. If it means that the EXIF metadata is dumped into the XMP data, perhaps doing that is the solution to my problem. Does it do that?
Re: Nikon Vertical Images
No it dumps the Exif to screen.
Maybe you can change the orientation tag in Image Details (haven't tried it). It should be in the Technical section.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
Changing the Orientation in the Technicals section sometimes (rarely) changes the display within Supreme, seems to always change the orientation displayed in the Windows Explore thumbnail, but never changes the orientation when viewing the large image using Windows Photo Viewer (or whatever it's called).IDimager wrote:Maybe you can change the orientation tag in Image Details (haven't tried it). Re: Nikon Vertical Images
The rotate commands are hidden well in Photo Supreme. If you hover the name area of the thumb, an arrow is displayed at the left of the label counter. (If there are ratings, the arrow is an star) When hovering the arrow, a menu above is displayed with the left & right rotate. On my keyboard, the shortcut [ rotates right, the ] is doing nothing.Mike Buckley wrote:When using IDimager, I was able to simply rebuild the thumbnail and use the right bracket (]) key to correct the orientation. I have downloaded 3 nef files to check what is happening. I'm unable to change the orientation in the windows explorer or FPV with Photo Supreme.
I think the xmp file is ignored, because opening the image in Photo Shop will display the changed orientation.
Reading the exif orientation flag with Exiftool confirmed the orientation is not changed, only in the xmp the orientation is changed.
Changing the exif orientation using exiftool, then importing in photo supreme, I is the easiest workaround.

Thanks for checking all of that out, Lippe.
Interesting! On my keyboard, [ rotates left and ] rotates right as I would expect.lippe wrote:On my keyboard, the shortcut [ rotates right, the ] is doing nothing.
I was hoping to avoid adding another software program into my workflow. However, if that's the easiest workaround, I'll do it. I believe MikeP is still using Nikon Capture NX2, so I reached out to him and am eager to learn how he deals with all of this.Changing the exif orientation using exiftool, then importing in photo supreme, I is the easiest workaround.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
Considering that Photo Supreme is XMP-driven, I wonder if that constitutes a bug. I can certainly appreciate why Photo Supreme would rely on EXIF for this particular function. It's just a bit frustrating that for reasons I don't understand, IDimager handled this issue whereas Supreme seems not to do so.lippe wrote:I think the xmp file is ignored, because opening the image in Photo Shop will display the changed orientation. It might be good to remind readers of this thread that Capture NX2, which seems to be the source of this problem, is no longer supported by Nikon.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
Photo Supreme is expecting when the EXIF rotation is written to the XMP rotation, both hold the same setting and should be synchronized.
When Windows is reading the EXIF value, Photo Supreme is reading the XMP value... this will lead to the results you are experiencing.
But when using tools that do not read/write xmp, they will only change the EXIF. (I don't have Nikon 's Capture NX2)
When you rewrite the metadata with any xmp aware tool; both rotation value's (EXIF/XMP) should be in sync. (by writing the XMP to EXIF, or by writing the EXIF again to XMP)
I think there is no gain by duplicating existing EXIF to XMP if both have identical information as this causes this problem.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
I don't understand exactly the issue, but doesn't "Convert Metadata to XMP" help in this case?
Re: Nikon Vertical Images
Hi Mike
Email me a copy of the file and I'll have a look.
I haven't had this problem in ages so I'm also a bit stumped - but I'll investigate.

Re: Nikon Vertical Images
I can confirm that the orientation of Capture NX2 edited NEFs are not shown correctly in Photo Supreme.
(There are several ways to correct this 'per photo' the easiest one being rotating them in the full screen mode, using the right tab of the mouse)
