Migrating from IDimager V5 to Photo Supreme

Post by Hert » 18 Sep 12 14:10

I often get the question if a V5 catalog database can be upgraded to Photo Supreme. The answer is YES. Not the other way around.

Keep in mind that it's good practice to keep a backup of your catalog database before going this path. This because a Photo Supreme catalog database can not be downgraded to V5 anymore.

To upgrade your V5 catalog to Photo Supreme:
1. Install Photo Supreme
2. Start Photo Supreme
3. Click Preferences in the main toolbar
4. Tick the option "Show a login dialog on startup" and click Apply
5. Close Photo Supreme

6. In IDimager V5, backup your existing database. Do this from within the application Tools -> Catalog Maintenance -> Backup -> To Folder
7. With Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder %localappdata%\IDimager\Catalog
8. Copy all the idimager.cat.db file from this folder (Ctrl+C)
9. Paste in folder %localappdata%\IDimager Systems, Inc.\Catalog (Ctrl+V)
10. Start Photo Supreme and make sure that you enter the password that you used in IDimager;
11. Your old V5 catalog will be converted
12. Optionally disable the login dialog again (see step 3 and 4)

13. Build thumbnails/previews in PSU. It's not recommended to take over the thumbs/previews database from IDimager
14. Now you need to build a Photo Supreme search index to make sure that your old data becomes indexed as well. To do so you can use this script :
http://repository.idimager.com/openreso ... B5694673A8
15. Follow the instructions from the script's page to run the script. Make sure that you don't kill the application while the script runs. It may appear that the application is stalled during it's execution.
16. After building the search index it's now time to compact your database. Do that from the Tools->Catalog menu

IDimager V5 users aren't used to using the search bar because it just works too slow. The Search bar in PSU is beyond the capabilities of that in IDI. I highly recommend that you give it a twirl and be surprised with the results.

I've updated the database instructions. Make sure that you compact your database after the database conversion. Do this by clicking Preferences -> Catalog -> Compact button

That will bring more speed to your converted catalog.
