Sharing by email - caption line

Post by Stephen » 01 Jan 17 20:42

A very happy new year to Hert and all participants!

Using the function >Share >By Email
Does anybody know how to add a caption line to the body of the email below the image(s) being sent please? Clicking on the Caption Signature and editing it allows a variety of options, but the caption line text always appears within the image and not below it, like a watermark.

Added for clarity:
Sharing by email is useful to show anybody a selection of images from which to select which they want. Currently the recipient has to return the selects and delete the others, rather than by just quoting the captions (or file names) beneath the images. It can be difficult on this end to determine which images those are, if, i.e. they are portraits with only minor differences in the expressions.

Both Psu functions 'watermark' and 'caption' are very similar. However, a caption is normally used beneath an image. Adding text within an image is distracting and involves an extra step if it then becomes necessary to resend the selects without the integrated text.

PSu currently adds the following text in the body of the email, so we know that the requested function is possible:
"Im sending you the attached image sized and sent with Photo Supreme". The question is whether this caption text can be added below individual images?

Perhaps I just cannot find the magic button?

I would actually quite like to know how this works myself, especially if it is possible to include not just any caption, but a specific one, i.e., from a specific xmp field. That would be great!
However, right now I don't even have a clue how to simply add the file name as a caption :?

I can't think of any way to do it in PSU today. You could create a feature request, although it could be difficult to implement well. I'm sure Hert could create html templates that could do what you want but creating ones that would display consistently in all of the different email clients being used these days could be challenging. This really sounds like a task better accomplished by using a sharing site. It would be far more efficient to send links to images than to include multiple images embedded in the body email messages.

This will be very dependent on your operating system, email client, etc - but you could use PSU to share to a (temporary) folder; select the images in the folder; right click in windows explorer and "send to email". Did a quick test using W7 and Thunderbird and this created a message with the images as attachments, a subject line that said
"Emailing: 20170102_162156_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_003.jpg, 20170102_162109_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_001.jpg, 20170102_162125_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_002.jpg"

and a body that said
"Your message is ready to be sent with the following file or link attachments:
20170102_162156_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_003.jpg
20170102_162109_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_001.jpg
20170102_162125_Lumia 635_WP_20170102_002.jpg"
which if I understand correctly is the kind of thing you want? Not a great solution but if it works for you, and at least it's easy to do.

If you click > Share >manage > email transfer > caption signature > click on caption signature > my caption > edit captions, then you can add almost any xmp field you wish. However it (they) appear within the confines of the image and so they are NOT captions, but watermarks.

This leads me to question what the difference is to the watermark signature?

@snowman
Thanks, I tried your suggestion under Mac using the default mail client (called Mail) but it does not transfer the file names, only the files.

Hi Stephen,
thanks much for explaining that !!!
I agree: it seems odd indeed, if the captions are added as watermark. :?

Thank you Stephen for submitting to Mantis and posting the question in the first place. It never occurred to me that I could send captions with emailed pics. I was disappointed that it does appear they are sent with watermarking instead but I hope Hert will make a quick fix to this feature.
