GPX file generated by Holux M-241 not recogniced

Postby Frankyls » 23 May 09 17:51

Hi,
my WBT-201 GPS logger broke, so I bought a Holux m-241 logger online which arrived yesterday. Unfortunately the GPX file generated by the loggers software is not recognized in IDI's GPS panel. The button "Add GPS from GPX track" is not shown. I tries GPSBabel, but I wasn't successful.
Does anyone know a solution or workaround for this problem?

Frank,

From what I can find out it looks that your unit does not produce GPX files.
Gpsbabel has some options specific for your unit (m241 and m241-bin). Have you tried to use these?

If you're not succesful you could upload a (zipped) example to this forum, so that we can have a look at the format...

I'm one step further, I could read the Holux data with GPSBabel and generate a GPX file, which is correctly recognized by IDI. My mistake was to select "USB" connection (I connected it with a USB cable), but the correct setting is "COM3". Unfortunately I deleted all older track data in the Holux.
So I will go out again, track my way, shot some photos amd see if IDI works as it did with the WBT-201 - tomorrow becase its late in old Germany :D

Hi Frank,

Your example makes it a lot clearer.

The problem I see immediately is that it does not contain a track log. It looks as if the track log was written as a route. These are normally meant to describe a series of points that you can upload to your GPS and describe a route that you want to follow.

I don't know the Holux software, but maybe it has options to change this behaviour. If not then there is the possibility to let gpsbabel transform the route into a track (using the transform filter), but it would of course introduce an extra step in your workflow...

Thanks,
I already looked for any options in the Holux software, but there are only a few, and they are not what you described. I'll try it with GPSBabel tomorrow.
I'll keep you up to date.

Hi again,
it works with GPSBabel. I can load the GPS data directly from the Holux m-241 with GPSBabel and transform it to a GPX file. One click on the filter button a menue with several options opens. Here I selected transform "routes to waypoints", thats all what I did (of course I entered a file name and location).
The GPX file generated this way works fine with IDI :D

So I only need the vista driver from holux, not more.

Thanks for pushing me to give GPSBabel a deeper look.

I convert data from m-241 to NMEA format and use GeoSetter (http://www.geosetter.de/en/).

I also have the M-241, bought it a year ago.
If I remember correctly, the GPX that the Holux software writes does not use tracks, but it writes all the points of a track out as waypoints or some weird stuff like that.
Also, it only wrote parts of what it really could record to the GPX output (for example, it omits the altitude).

Didn't liked what it did, so I am also using GPS Babel to connect to the device and save a GPX file. The file that GPS Babel creates is much better than what the Holux software does. I also wrote an email about that to Holux, but never got an answer.
