Where are originals stored?

Postby pbb » 29 Jul 10 0:11

Hi all,

I'm sure this question has been asked before, it's really a beginners question, but I wasn't able to find the answer.

When I edit a cataloged image, this editing is "non-destructive", that means in the recipe panel I can "undo" the modification. But when I browse the physical file folder with Explorer, I see the modifications are applied to the file there. This means the original image has been stored somewhere else.

Where are the originals stored? I'd like to know this because I've had so many different applications filling up my system partition with temporary and backup files in the past, even going so far that Windows crashes because of lack of disk space, and I want to be certain that IDImager is not going to do that when I'm editing lots of images...

Thanks, Peter

Peter,

Non destructive does not mean the file will not be altered! Non destructive means the image data (pixels) will not be altered!
When you sync the data between your catalog and the image, the data (recipe, catalog data) will be stored (by default) either:

Within the image file in a data block called "XMP" if the file format is DNG, jpg, tiff etc.
or in a separate xmp-file if it is a RAW file. The XMP-file is in the same location as the image!

You can enable write to RAW-files in the options!

Hope this helps a bit...

Ok, I think I just get confused and didn't check the results properly...

I performed a crop in IDImager, and then from the Open With menu (within IDImager) I opened the file in GIMP. I am sure I saw the cropped image in GIMP, but now when I try it again, I see it is the original. Which in a way, is more logical actually.

Guess I need to start going to bed earlier... But .. I .. want .. to .. go .. through .. all .. my .. photos .. first .....
