Problem has been solved after an email conversation with Hert. Involved removing all of the problem files from the database, then re-importing them. That did the trick.

If you get such message then most likely there are images in your catalog that either do not exist or for some reason cannot be read.
You should be able to find these files in the timeline under a 1899 year.
