I want to see my edited images as front image in a version set.
As far as I understand, the image shown in front of a version set is the "main image" (unless you click on another numbered icon of the version set).

You can use the default sorting, which is a lot faster than sorting with macro commands.
This is what I use. I don't sort by macro.
Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to find the reason for this strange behaviour.

The answer to #4 depends on the preference settings. You have the choice to "Automatically write out catalog changes to the files" or not
